Working as a sniper is an elite role within the Army, and it is certainly not for everyone. When you choose to learn to be a sniper, you’ll need to meet certain requirements and be approved for the role. You will also have to attend sniper training. Being a sniper is a life-and-death job, both for yourself as a soldier and for those around you, so being well-trained is essential.

Army Sniper School Requirements

In order to be considered for sniper school, the Army requires that a solider be active duty or in the Reserve or National Guard. Further, they must have military occupation specialty (MOS) 11B, 19D or 18 series in the rank of E3 through E6. The Army notes that ASI B4 designation can only be given to soldiers possessing MOS 11B. Further, the Army indicates that soldiers must have a solid performance record with no history of alcohol or drug abuse. In addition, they must volunteer to start sniper school and bring with them a letter of recommendation from their commander. Soldiers must have a physical profile code of 111221 at the minimum, and also must have a valid physical (from the last 12 months) that shows they have 20/20 correctable vision and color discrimination of red/green. Additional requirements of soldiers wishing to become snipers include passing an Army physical fitness test with a minimum of 70 points in each event within 30 days prior to the start of the course. Soldiers must also have DA Form 705 completed, and meet height and weight standards of AR 600-9. Prospective snipers have to pass a psychological evaluation (MMPI/CPI) within one year of the date of their training, have a GT score of 100 or higher, and must receive an expert qualification with the M4 rifle within six months of training.

Army Sniper School Is Rigorous

The Army explains that its sniper training is quite rigorous and is certainly not for everyone. In 2017, for instance, 46 candidates entered Army sniper school at Fort Benning, Georgia. After the end of Week 5 of the course, only four candidates remained. Those four did go on to graduate at the end of the seven-week course. That said, the Army indicates typical graduation rates are usually in the range of 50 percent. If a soldier has been recommended to sniper training by their commanding officers, chances are better that they will succeed. Officers are trained to identify the potential in their soldiers and know what it takes to succeed in sniper training and in the role beyond schooling.
