Can PS4 overheat?

Your PS4 may overheat if the vents are blocked, or if there isn't enough clearance between the vents and other objects. The PS4 will also tend to overheat if there's a lot of dust inside. The temperature in your room can also have an effect, as can faulty hardware or firmware.

There are three different iterations of the PlayStation 4 console, and they can all overheat for similar reasons. If your PS4 is overheating, it's usually due to issues like vent clearance, clogged vents, or the fan not working, but there are a few other problems to check out as well.

What Causes PS4 Overheating?

When your PS4 is overheating, you'll usually see a message like this:

These instructions pertain to all versions of the PS4 hardware, including the original PlayStation 4, the PS4 Slim, and the PS4 Pro. There are a number of things that can cause a PS4 to overheat, many of which you can fix yourself at home. Your PS4 may overheat if the vents are blocked, or if there isn't enough clearance between the vents and other objects. The PS4 will also tend to overheat if there's a lot of dust inside. The temperature in your room can also have an effect, as can faulty hardware or firmware. Sony recommends only using the PS4 in environments where the temperature is between 41 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with a narrower range of 50 to 80 degrees being preferred. If your room is hotter than 80 degrees, that may lead to your PS4 overheating.

How to Stop a PS4 From Overheating

If you're experiencing problems where your PS4 is overheating, follow this troubleshooting procedure to cool things off. Shut down your PS4 and wait. Before trying anything else, shut off your PS4 and allow it to cool down to a normal temperature. Then turn it back on and return to the activity that caused it to overheat. If it doesn't overheat, you can safely use your console as you normally would. Ensure proper placement for air flow. Your PS4 needs room to push the hot air away (and not suck that same hot air back into the system). If the console is placed in a small, enclosed area, it will tend to overheat. It may also overheat if the vents are placed too close to cabinet walls, other electronics, and any other obstructions. Try moving your PS4 to an area where it has clearance on all sides. Check the temperature in your room. As mentioned earlier, you should refrain from playing your PS4 if the ambient air temperature in your game room is over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If it's hotter than that, and you can't do anything to lower the air temperature, move the console to a cooler room or consider using a PS4 cooling stand. Clean dust from the PS4 vents. Using canned air, compressed air, an electric air duster, or any similar device to gently blow dust from the vents of the PS4. Alternately, you can use the hose attachment of a vacuum to suck dust from the vents. A combination of these two techniques usually works the best. After removing as much dust as possible, check to see if the PS4 still overheats. In some cases, you may need to take your PS4 apart to fully remove all the dust. If your PS4 is still under warranty, check to see if Sony will repair or replace it for free. Taking the console apart yourself may void your warranty. Manually update your PS4. In some cases, old or damaged firmware may prevent the fan from coming on when it's supposed to. To rule this out, you'll need to make sure that you're running the latest version of the PS4 system software. Update your game software. If your PS4 is overheating when playing a specific game, the game software itself may be at fault. To rule this out, you'll have to check for updates to the game and install them if available. On the main PS4 menu, select the game. Select Check for Update. Select Install Update, if an update exists. Wait for the update to install, and try playing the game. If the game is brand new, or if it just received a major update, there may be a flaw in the game code that's causing one of the PS4's system to run at its highest capability and causing the system to overheat. In that case, you'll have to wait for the publisher to provide a fix and update your game when that happens.

If your console still has an overheating problem after following all of these steps, it's likely that you have a hardware problem that you won't be able to fix at home without special skills and tools. In that case, further work on this problem is best left to the professionals. Your fan itself may be in need of repairs or replacement, or there may be another problem with your hardware. In some cases, removing the heat sink and replacing the thermal paste can also help. You can attempt to replace these things yourself, but doing so could end up wasting money if you end up replacing the wrong components, or voiding your warranty if you still have one. For additional assistance with this issue, consider contacting Sony customer service.
