Leave the indoor faucets and valves open until you restore the system, but close the outdoor faucets to prevent insects and other pests from entering. Generally there is no need to drain the water heater unless the system will be unused for several months. Empty the toilets by flushing and pour about a pint of plumbing antifreeze into the bowls to replace the water in the traps beneath them. Also pour about a half-pint of antifreeze into the sink, tub and basin drains. When a heavy freeze is expected and you are home, open the faucets on vulnerable pipes slightly, so that water trickles continuously. Moving water is less likely to freeze than standing water, and the trickle is a sign that all is well. If a pipe freezes find the blockage by checking which faucets work and which do not, starting with the faucet farthest along the pipe from the supply entrance. Open all faucets connected to the frozen pipe, but close the main water-supply valve about three-quarters of the way. Then use a heat lamp or a hair dryer to warm the frozen section or, if the pipe is inaccessible, the wall or other part of the building enclosing it. When the water begins to trickle, reopen the supply valve all the way. If pipes freeze during a blackout, making the use of a hair dryer or heat gun impossible, it is usually best to delay action unless an alternative source of electricity or heat is available.
