Can you shower on Survivor?

We already know that Survivor contestants are provided with the barest of creature comforts (vital medications and feminine products) but not much else. They really do go to the bathroom in the dirt or in the ocean, and there are no showers or sinks for the entire 39 days that they spend on the show.

If the mental and emotional fatigue of voting out your tribe mates while trying to evade their attempts to eliminate you first don't make Survivor hard enough, the castaways of the hit CBS show also have to contend with the physical demands of living on a remote island. We already know that Survivor contestants are provided with the barest of creature comforts (vital medications and feminine products) but not much else. They really do go to the bathroom in the dirt or in the ocean, and there are no showers or sinks for the entire 39 days that they spend on the show. And while there is less discussion about what the castaways eat, fans are still curious to know what their meal time is like—here's what we know about what Survivor contestants eat while they're on the show.

What do castaways eat on Survivor?

Production provides Survivor contestants with the rice that we see them eat on the show—but it's not a lot. The castaways are given just one bag of rice for the 39 days, and they have to split it among each tribe member. While it's unclear how much rice is in said bag (most bags of rice are sold in 20 or 50 lb. packs), it's been reported that each castaway gets about one cup of rice a day. The castaways have also been known to take advantage of the edible options in the environment around camp, and we've seen people on the show eat things like coconuts, fish, and crabs. In 2018, Lyrsa Torres, a castaway on Survivor: David vs. Goliath, said that she had also considered eating worms, lizards, and larvae to avoid starving. Of course, reward challenges offer a chance for the castaways to eat some of the food they've been missing, and past rewards have included items like pizza, chocolate cake, and fried chicken. One reward that contestants look forward to in particular is the one where they get to take chickens back to their camp if they win the challenge, although arguments have also started over whether or not the chickens should be kept for eggs or killed for their meat. Another downside of the hearty meals at reward challenges is the stomachaches that often come along with them. As Wendell Holland, winner of Survivor: Ghost Island told us last year, the food from the reward challenges "ran right through" him. And during Survivor: Kaôh Rōng, Joe Del Campo had to be medically evacuated from the show after his body wasn't able to handle the steak kebabs that he had eaten at a reward challenge. "I’m not a big meat eater, but it was so good that I couldn’t stop eating. If you put that satay in a line, it was about three feet of satay," Del Campo later revealed to Entertainment Weekly.
