Meet Daniel:Cincinnati-born law clerk makes 'Survivor' season 42 debut

He's one of 18 contestants vying for the $1 million prize and the chance to "outwit, outplay and outlast" other players. While at camp building his shelter with the Vati tribe, Strunk shared his experience battling childhood leukemia with his tribemates. He was diagnosed at age 15 and went through three years of chemotherapy. "One of the things that helped me through all this was watching 'Survivor,' " he said. "It was just a way of enjoying something that brought me to a different world ... the idea to now go from a hospital bed where I could not support myself, and have the strength brush my teeth, to be on an island, about to have the adventure of a lifetime, it's surreal. How could I not say yes to that opportunity?" He added that the number one reason he was on the show was for other kids like him in a hospital bed "longing to have an adventure of this sort."

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Strunk and his tribe successfully gained immunity during the elimination challenge and did not have to go to the first "Tribal Council," where the losing tribe picks one of their members to vote off. During the first episode, two players went home: Jackson Fox, who was pulled from the game for medical reasons, and Zach Wurtenberger, who was voted off by his fellow tribemates.
