Did the Duke of Edinburgh kiss the Queen at her coronation?

Philip subverted convention during the actual ceremony as well. After pledging his allegiance to the Queen, he kissed the monarch on the cheek. This defied the scripted order of events for the day and simultaneously enraged his mother-in-law.

Queen's coronation: Lady Glenconner on requirements for maids

More info The Queen was crowned in a lavish ceremony more than 60 years ago following the death of her father, King George VI. The special occasion was also re-enacted in the first series of The Crown – the third series, coming out this Sunday, is expected to show the Queen after a decade of sitting on the throne and attempting to balance her private life with royal duties. According to one of the six aristocratic women chosen to be her Maids of Honour for her Coronation, Lady Anne Glenconner, the monarch experienced the friction between personal and professional even on the first official day on her reign – triggered by her husband. In her 2019 autobiography, ‘Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown’, Lady Glenconner explains how Philip tried to take over while the official photos were taken. She writes: “The Duke of Edinburgh wanted his friend Baron to take the photographs, but the Queen Mother was very fond of Cecil Beaton so she had overridden him.” Mr Beaton had photographed the Royal Family for many years, but soon became “exasperated” by the Duke of Edinburgh’s behaviour.

Lady Glenconner continued: “The Duke began to make a great deal of fuss, being frightfully bossy again, telling us where to stand and when to smile. “Cecil Beaton was very commanding behind the camera. “He was well known for taking a dislike to interfering comments, and the more the Duke of Edinburgh tried to have his say, the tetchier he became. “The Duke persisted, either not realising or not caring that he was disrupting the photographer, and eventually Cecil Beaton snapped. “He put down his camera, glared at the Duke of Edinburgh and said, ‘Sir, if you would like to take the photographs, please do’.” This reportedly caused great displeasure among the royals, especially as the esteemed photographer “then gestured to the camera and started to walk away”. Lady Glenconner claimed “the Queen looked horrified” and she was not the only one – the Queen Mother was not pleased either. DON'T MISS

She added: “Realising he had gone too far, the Duke of Edinburgh moved off.” Lady Glenconner also told The Guardian in 2014 that “once Cecil was in charge, he was very charming” as “he knew exactly what he wanted”. As the Queen’s Chair of her Coronation Commission, Philip fought to modernise the monarchy in the lead-up to Her Majesty’s coronation. He insisted it was televised so that it was accessible to the public, a highly controversial decision which upset many more traditional figures such as the Queen Mother and Winston Churchill.

Who bowed to Queen Elizabeth in the crown?

Watch: The Crown Season 6: Who Will Play Prince William & Kate Middleton? Claire Foy holds Queen Elizabeth II close to her heart. The Crown star bowed down to the Queen, who she played on the Netflix show, following the monarch's passing on Sept.

In the past, Claire—who won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2018 for the role—discussed some of the challenges that she faced in portraying the Queen. "It's very difficult to play someone who everyone has a preconception about and not sort of let that in," she told The Wrap in 2017. "It's hard enough alone to imagine yourself as the queen." Following the queen's passing, many celebrities, political figures and fellow royals have honored the monarch's legacy, including her oldest son, King Charles III (formerly regarded as Prince Charles). "To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: Thank you," Charles said on Sept.9 during his first speech as King "Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May 'flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.'"
