Section One - Part D Wie ist die Temperatur?

In Germany , and in other European countries, temperature is measured differently than we measure it in the United States. We use the Fahrenheit scale to measure degrees , but in most other areas of the world, the Centigrade (Celsius) scale is used. Since you are going to need to be able to understand when you are told what temperature it is, you will need to learn how to convert degrees (Grad in German) from one scale to the other. Don't be scared. It really isn't difficult! To convert degrees Centigrade to Fahrenheit, we use this formula: 9/5C + 32 = F. So, imagine the temperature outside is 18 C. Can you try to figure the degrees Fahrenheit? 9/5 is 1.8. So you take 1.8 (multiplied by) 18 (the degrees C that we know) + 32 = 64.4 F. You try a few. Click on the link to see if you are able to do it correctly and let your teacher know if you are having trouble. 1. 10 C 50 F

2. 0 C 32F

3. 25 C 77F

4. 40 C 104 F

5. 34 C 93.2 F Now, you can see why it would be important to understand what the weather would feel like if you were told that it was 34 C in Germany. It would be a big difference from 34 F. Let's see now if we can convert the other way. That formula is: C = 5/9 F-17.777. Let's imagine the temperature outside is 80 F. Let's figure that one out. 5/9 is .56. So we take .56 (multiplied by 80) - 17.777 = 26 C. You try a few of these. 1. 100 F 38.2 C

2. 32 F 0 C

3. 15 F -9.38

4. 40 F 4.6 C

5. 212 F 100 C In order to ask what the temperature is, we say, Wie ist die Temperatur?

In order to respond, we say, Die Temperatur ist .... Grad.

Practice Activity Let's see if you can tell what the weather is most likely like after seeing the temperatures given. As with all activities in this course, you are expected to use what you have been learning to complete the activities. Assume that temperatures given are Centigrade. Write your responses down in complete sentences in German and then click on the link at the end to check yourself. 1. Die Temperatur ist 5 Grad. Es ist eiskalt.

2. Die Temperatur ist 30 Grad. Es ist sehr heiss .

3. Die Temperatur ist 14 Grad. Es ist kühl .

4. Die Temperatur ist 23 Grad. Es ist warm.

How old would a World War 2 vet be today?

Yielding to the inalterable process of aging, the men and women who fought and won the great conflict are now in their 90s or older. They are dying quickly—according to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2022.

The passing of the WWII generation

Every day, memories of World War II—its sights and sounds, its terrors and triumphs—disappear. Yielding to the inalterable process of aging, the men and women who fought and won the great conflict are now in their 90s or older. They are dying quickly—according to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2022. Honoring the 20th-century veterans’ sacrifice before they pass from the scene is at the forefront of everything we do at The National WWII Museum—from our exhibits, to oral histories, to the Museum’s $400 million capital campaign, a lasting tribute to the war generation. “There’s no time to lose,” said Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller, President and CEO Emeritus of the Museum. “We want to be able to finish and dedicate our expansion while we still have members of the Greatest Generation to thank for their sacrifice and service to the nation and to show the world what they mean to the principle of freedom.”
