On stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook co-founder and CEO, says that he still codes sometimes for fun. But there is a rule at Facebook, he says: “If you are checking in code, you have to maintain your code.” When asked if he still codes, he answered, jokingly: “Everything I do breaks, but we fix things quickly.” More seriously, Zuckerberg doesn’t want to commit code and then have another developer maintaining it because he is stuck in a meeting. That is why he never commits code changes to the main branch. But by saying that, he reiterates that there is a hacker culture at Facebook that is highly driven by developers. Being able to work on the features that matter to you is one of the most important aspects of working at Facebook. Earlier in the fireside chat, he said that the mission is important at Facebook. It should be what is driving the developers and bringing passion. “What resonates with a lot of people is that you are building stuff for your friends and family,” he said.
