Introduction

In the Summer of 2017 a teenager by the name of Becca Longo etched her name into the history books by becoming the first ever female to earn a football scholarship at Adams State University in Alamosa Colorado and be signed to the NFL(National Football League).Although adored and admired by many fans for her accomplishments on the field as a kicker in addition to her reputation as a real life superwoman,Becca Longo would face several uphill battles at the start of her new college athletic career.Nevertheless,in an attempt to further the movement for women in athletic competition Becca would set out on a battle against discrimination,bias and predjuidice.Follow us as we dive into the story of this real life superhero and her journey to become the first ever female NFL player.

Early beginnings

Originally born in Chandler Arizona , Becca Longo had always been athletic by nature from birth, mastering the skills of skis before the age of four and soccer at the age of nine.Sport and athletics had always come easy to her,she was a natural competitor who seem’d to possess a deep love for sport .It was however in soccer were she discovered her remarkable accuracy with a ball on the field and as such decided to follow in the footsteps of her older brother bobby by trying out for the football team.She would later following this decision,become more motivated to master the skills on the football field after she’d see the victories by her brother who played the position of a defensive line back .The next week following Becca’s decision would however see her standout amongst the most impressive kickers in Arizona Cardinals history when she would begin training.

The challenges

Although following Becca’s tryouts would see her stand out amongst the most impressive kickers in Phoenix .Alex Zendejas, prestigious state level coach wouldn’t even invest time in her until he was satisfied with her performance.Once he was however,Becca’s skills became a clear indication that she would become a ‘star’ .Nevertheless,despite praise,respect and acknowledgement from her teammates some of her more conservationist and traditional coaches felt she was going against long standing sport customs by being a football player.This desire to simply follow her passion consequently for Becca became a battle not only against enemies but against the mindsets and perception of men set years even decades prior.’’Nothing would stand in my way’’,Becca would tell ESPN in an interview.During her Sophomore year Becca would join the Queens Creek Varsity team and score a perfect record of 4–4 yet ,she would still not receive any support from coaches and allegedly became bullied by fans online.This lack of a adequate support structure from her coaches in addition to the demotive atmosphere from fans would force Becca to transfer to Bash High School.

Becca would make her debut as the kicker for Bash Highschool in 2016,proving her place on this team as well as her abilities by connecting 35 of the 38 points in addition to landing her only field goal of the season.Following her move to Basha Highschool Becca would find positive environment ,happiness,adoring coaches and a more supportive fan community.The NCAA would comparatively only ,first take notice of her in 2016 after led a record of 38 points.Becca was not only awarded a scholarship following her performances during this season but achieved the respect of all her peers and fans in the community.Becca would unfortunately suffer a knee injury that would leave her absent from the sport.Although today she no longer competes actively in 2019 she participated in the Hohokam Junior College Athletic Conference.If there’s anything we can learn from Becca’s story it’s that perseverance is key,if she’d ever quit training she’d never be good enough to join the team.’Ignore the doubters’,if she ever listened to her critiques she’d never be good enough to make history.

Role Model

Becca Longo today has comparatively become a role model for millions of young girls in not only America but the world.She serves as a testament to the ideal that if you believe in your dreams anything is possible.In a interview with ABC’s good morning America she stated.’’If they want to play football,go out and play football.If they want to play hockey’’, every girl should have a choice.At Adam State University however,Becca Longo seems to have transitioned quite well into new life at college as she is a signed two sport athlete in both basketball and football.Furthermore,as a direct result of her Adams State extended scholarship programme Becca became the first female in history to earn a scholarship from the NCAA whether she was in division I or II.
