11 Lessons about Survival that Apply to Everyday Life

What I learned about surviving daily life from Laurence Gonzalez’ book Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who dies, and Why

Desolation Wilderness, South Lake Tahoe, California

Any survival situation will quickly tell you who you are. From losing a loved one to being diagnosed with a longterm illness, or being near death, these experiences and life events can be deadly or profound depending on how we react to them. Most people react with fear and emotional response rather than their cognitive reason, survival skills, or intuition. In fact, Gonzalez says “only 10 to 20 percent of untrained people can stay calm and think in the midst of a survival emergency.” So this has me wondering… how are the majority of people reacting in non-emergency situations if we can’t keep calm when our life depends on it?

Here are some tools and reminders to help us not just survive, but thrive in everyday life. 1. Believe that anything is possible. “Things that have never happened before happen all the time,” (Sagan 120). Take this both for the good and the bad. 2. Stay humble. “Every time you step into a river, it’s a different river,” (Heraclitus 118). Remember that you are not a master no matter how much experience you have and that you do not know everything. Learn and re-learn again. 3. Be aware. “Everyone, to one degree or another, sees not the real world but the ever-changing state of the self in an ever-changing invention of the world,” (Gonzalez 122). Be present. Keep realistic perceptions of what’s going on around you, find the information, and be open. 4. Be adaptable. Be organized, create goals, and make a plan, but don’t worship it. Don’t fall in love with the plan. Be flexible. Have a beginner mind and be able to remap your world over and over again. “Those who avoid accidents are those who see the world clearly, see it changing, and change their behavior accordingly, (Gonzalez 281). 5. Stay calm. Stress and paranoia are useless to the mind and can be crippling. Being distressed and upset is not a survival tactic and it doesn’t help you in life either. 6. Take care of yourself first. You are responsible only for yourself. No one is going to rescue you but yourself and you can’t count on anybody. Blaming “God” or the “universe” or “the powers that be” or “them,” and even yourself is not productive. Avoid the question, “why me?” You just have to get on with it and do the next best thing. Accept it. 7. Listen to your gut. Always. Having intuition over impulse can save you when you need it most so use your internal guide. 8. Use your emotions. Use your fear, don’t be ruled by it. Use active-passiveness: accept the situation without giving in to it, (Leach 218). 9. Find the beauty. Use gratitude, humility, wonder, imagination, and logical determination. Enjoy life, and find something to live for. 10. Choose life over death every day. This is a spiritual and physical choice you will have to make for a lifetime. Do whatever it takes. Choose to be a survivor and not a victim. “Eat life or life will eat you,”(Santini 277). Be prepared. 11. Celebrate your successes. Make your mantra and say it over again. Practice positivity. Reward yourself for how far you’ve come.
