How to keep your composting toilet clean as a whistle

13 November 2017

Composting toilets – like anything in your home, will need a little maintenance every now and then. One of the great things about having a composting toilet in your home is that you save a lot of water year after year, and you get a great humus-like product to use out in your garden after a period of time. Now in saying this, you won’t get out of having to clean your composting toilet from time to time (it will be a very rich person that invents a toilet that never needs cleaning!).

What parts of a composting toilet need to be cleaned?

Before we jump into the how to of keeping your composting toilet as clean as a whistle, let’s first go over the different parts of your composting toilet and which bits need to be cleaned.

The Toilet Seat and Lid

Let’s be honest – this is usually where most of the action happens on any type of toilet so it’s usually the item that needs the lion's share of cleaning the most often, so it makes sense that we start here. When cleaning the lid and seat we recommend that you use our Nature Flush Enzymes as this is a natural detergent and enzyme catalyst derived from bacterial fermentation that not only cleans your toilet but will help promote the composting process.

The Bowl or Pedestal

As with a general flush toilet, you can use our Nature Flush Enzymes like you would say a product like ‘Toilet Duck’ – squirt some around the bowl and let it settle for a short time, then use a toilet brush to clean around the bowl. Once finished you can spray lightly with water or wet some toilet paper or paper towel to wipe down the inside of the bowl or pedestal. Important Note - Please do not use toilet wipes as these tend to have harsh chemicals in them that can kill your compost and the wipes will not compost down.

What cleaning products can be used with a composting toilet?

It’s very important that you use appropriate cleaning products in your composting toilet. If you use cleaning products with a high level of chemicals there’s a very good chance they will kill off the microbes in your composting pile. This is not something you want to happen as it will ruin your composting process and you will need to clean out your system and start from scratch. Important Note: It’s very important that you use biodegradable cleaning products in your composting toilet as these products won’t harm your compost pile.
