With the news that the ps4 is entering its twilight/sunset years i began to see people commenting that it's too soon for the ps5. And while i agree with that consensus given the recent release of the Ps4 Pro as a min-gen refresh, and its safe to assume sony agrees since a new console won't be announced this e3 (according to rumour) Most of the logic behind this is based off the unusually long 7th generation that most young adults grew up with. So in order to somewhat quell this and have a depository of how long a console exists without a successor I compiled the launch dates of the current big 3 console makers for every major console(to my knowledge) they released.

Let's start with the seasoned vet Nintendo and their consoles:

According to the data above if you disregard the 7th generation the average number of days in a console life cycle is 1,841 , which translates to roughly 5 common years(not doing leap years) and 16 days. Which only encapsulates how much of anomaly the 7th generation was given that all 3 consoles went over that average by at the least roughly a year, and at the most 3. And this console generation seems to be following suit. At least in terms of sony and Microsoft. While the Wii U was a commercial failure, from the standpoint of time it kind of follows suit with the 5 year time period despite cutting it short by a couple of months. Furthermore, if one were to operate off of that average the 9th generation consoles would be coming later this year. but i doubt that's going to be the case with trend of console generations getting longer and longer, and the hardware itself having diminishing returns.
