The Second Amendment is great and allows you the right to self-defense.

Many people capitalize on this and take their own personal defense very seriously and often ask the question “how many guns should I have?”

This answer depends on the size of your household and your budget.

At a minimum, every household should have at least two firearms. One handgun and one rifle.

Why do you need more than one gun?

Every firearm is designed for a specific purpose and use case.

A good example is you wouldn’t use a sword to slice bread. Just like you wouldn’t use a shotgun for concealed carry. Knowing what a firearm is designed for will help you understand why you need more than one. For home defense, you may decide to use a revolver because of its maneuverability and its simplistic and reliable design. Let’s say you live out in the country then an AR pistol might be the best choice for you. This will all depend on your situation, experience, and common threats you may encounter. There really is no “one size fits all” fits all when it comes to deciding on how many guns you need.

Situation Depends

Living with a large family, a good recommendation is to have one pistol and one AR-15 for every able body man and woman in your house. Maybe a smaller .22 rifle for your kids and a simple revolver for grandma. If you live in a city apartment maybe a 9mm pistol is good enough. Concealed carry may help you decide you want one full-size pistol and one compact pistol to carry more comfortably in different seasons of the year.

Survival mindset

One is none and two is one.

Having a backup firearm is also a good idea. If one because damaged of needs to be repaired and you do not have spare parts.

Waiting while being unarmed and defenseless is not a good idea.

Multiple firearms will give you some peace of mind.

You will always want more

People that just start out with firearms often decide on one or two and then consider themselves prepared. Just a fair warning, you may become somewhat obsessed with your new purchases and want to buy more. One thing I have learned when it comes to firearms is that as soon as I get a new gun, I am already thinking about the next one I want.

Buy and own as many as you want

Don’t let other people tell you what you need and should have as a definitive answer. Make the decision for yourself. A good example is I know lots of gun owners who say they don’t need an AR-15 or that they are weapons of war. But guess what, as soon as the economy starts to shake or fear of the unknown future sets in they go out and purchase an AR-15. I guess they didn’t want to be left out because half of the population in America owns these types of weapons.

Funny how that happens.

How many guns do I need for SHTF?

This is difficult to answer and I would argue that having a lot of ammunition and magazines is more important than owning a lot of different guns.

But I would say 5:

Pistol in 9mm, an

AR-15 chambered in 5.56mm

Mid-range designated marksman rifle (308 or similar caliber)

12GA Shotgun

.22lr semi-auto rifle

And a Barrett M82A1 50 cal for bonus (just kidding but seriously)

What gun to buy first?

A good place to start is with a semi-automatic pistol in 9mm.

This is good to learn the basics and widely available and common. Prices have shot up in recent years and show no sign of coming down, unfortunately. Here is a post I wrote on the Best Handguns for Beginners & Self Defense. After the handgun, an AR-15 should be immediately next on your list. I do not have a post on which one to buy, but I do have a post on how to set one up. If you want to know How to Setup Your AR-15 you can learn it here. It is a complete in-depth guide.

Best time to buy a gun?

The best time to buy a gun was yesterday. The second best time to buy a gun is now. Think of them as investments in your future. They will protect you and they really don’t lose value. You can always sell them for close to what you spent but I don’t recommend that. Also, they are always trying to be banned so get what you can before it’s too late.

Don’t forget to stock up on ammo

They don’t work without ammo and you will need a good amount in my opinion. At the bare minimum have 500 rounds of ammunition per firearm you own.

That’s just to start.

Ideally, you want thousands of rounds per caliber and firearm you own.

Just when you think you finally have enough ammo, buy more and you can thank me later.

How many guns are considered too many?

There is no such thing. Be financially responsible and only get what you can afford. Take your right to self-defense seriously and the Second Amendment was put in place for a reason. Never forget that.

One day your guns might save your life and your family.

Always be responsible and safe.

When you forget how many you have, only then are you truly prepared.
