How much does a PlayStation cost to run?

A PS4 will cost you between 4 and 6 pence per hour. If you play for 3 hours daily, you’ll spend between 86 pence to £1.21 per week. If you have a PS5 console, both the digital and disc versions will cost around 7 pence an hour or 50 pence to £1.29 per week.

How much electricity does a PlayStation use?

Before being able to figure out how much it costs to run a PlayStation, we need to know how much electricity each console uses. This is a little tough because the amount of power consumed depends on what you’re using your PlayStation for. For example, you’ll use a lot more power if you’re playing a top-of-the-range game with a VR headset plugged in, compared to if you were just using it to stream Netflix. The PS5 Digital Edition is rated at 340 watts whilst the Disc Edition has a maximum power rating of 350 watts (the extra power is needed for the drive). Although they have slightly different ratings, for these calculations I will treat the energy consumption as the same as it’s rare for your disc drive to work constantly when gaming.

According to Eurogamer, the PS5 will use around 200 watts when gaming.

As for a PS4, this uses less energy than a PS5. The newer edition is rated at 165 watts (the original was 250 watts) and the PS4 Pro is 310 watts. When gaming, this translates to around 120 watts from a PS4 and 170 watts from a PS4 Pro.

So, how does that relate to cost?

Tips for reducing your PlayStation energy usage

There are a few things that you can do to reduce the energy consumption of your PlayStation. First of all, make sure that your PlayStation has the power saving mode turned on. This should be on by default and will reduce the amount of power your console uses. You can reduce the brightness of the light on your controller. This will prolong the battery life and means that you don’t have to recharge it as often. Plus, the light really doesn’t do anything. If you want to take it a step further, you can also turn off the vibrations on the controller. And don’t use your PlayStation for streaming. Use your Smart TV instead as this will use less energy.

So, is a PlayStation expensive to run?

In the grand scheme of things, running a PlayStation isn’t going to cost you the earth. Yes, it’s slightly more expensive to use compared to an Xbox, but still far cheaper than appliances like electric ovens and kettles. But if you’re struggling with your electricity bill, then you could still consider reducing your PlayStation usage. By halving the amount you play from 3 hours to 1 1/2 per day, you could save up to £3 per month.
