The “King of the Monsters” is 65 years old this year.

The iconic Japanese film “Godzilla” was released in Nagoya, Japan, on Oct. 27, 1954. A week later it was released throughout Japan. Two years later, the Americanized version, “Godzilla, King of the Monsters” was released. The large prehistoric-like monster supposedly is disturbed by underwater hydrogen bomb tests. Ships and fish begin to disappear. Homes are destroyed and people are killed. A paleontologist sent to investigate discovers radioactive footprints. Various tactics are deployed to kill the monster, most of which fail. Godzilla’s nickname by those who created him, was Gojira – a combination of the word gorilla and kujira (the Japanese word for whale). According to mentalfloss.com, Godzilla was originally going to be “a giant, mutated octopus” but the producer opted for a “dinosaur-like design instead.”

Since then there have been more than 30 Godzilla movies.

Godzilla, according to The Criterion Collection, “clawed its way out of the sea, destroying everything in its path – and changing movies forever. … Godzilla defended its throne against a host of other formidable creatures, transforming from a terrifying symbol of nuclear annihilation into a benevolent (if still belligerent) Earth protector.” The Godzilla movies, culled from several sources, including imdb.com and The Criterion Collection:
