What is a Tiny House?

It doesn't have a set definition - but it's thought of as a home which is less than 450 square feet or 41 square meters. In the U.S, to put that in perspective, the average home is 1550 square feet (144 square meters)! So, a 'Tiny House', to many people - really is tiny! In the U.K, however, homes are much smaller, roughly 900 square feet (84 square meters).

How big is the average Tiny Home?

While the answer differs greatly from home to home, the average size is approx 161 square feet (15-20 square meters) for a one-bedroom home. Two bedroom models are closer to 215 square feet (20 square meters) and three bedrooms are typically larger, however no more than 450 square feet (41 square meters). While the size of your home is an important factor to consider, the key to tiny home living is to plan your interior well to match your lifestyle. It is also important to include areas of the home that everyone in the family will enjoy.

Can life be good in a Tiny Home?

A tiny home doesn't mean a tiny lifestyle. In fact, quite the opposite. Living in a cleverly arranged space means less clutter, better organisation, greener living, and a closer experience with those you live with and with nature. You'll be able to get rid of the rubbish that you've been hoarding for years as you downsize to a practical living space that is highly functional and is a fraction of the price of a conventional house. To answer the question 'can life be good?', quite honestly yes, it can be life changing, for those who embrace it. You see, the new home is equally as important as setting new habits and a new lifestyle to match the new home. For example, adjusting your routines, planning to spend more time outside or starting a new hobby.

Who are Tiny Homes suitable for?

Although we'd love to say, EVERYONE, this isn't always the case. If you're an outdoorsy type of person, love to travel, exercise regularly, love green areas or practise minimalism then this is definitely the type of lifestyle for you. Albeit daunting, moving from a great big house to a tiny home, you'll soon realise that the great outdoors becomes your daily playground and the appreciation for the smaller things in life is what it all about.

How many years can you refill a 20 lb propane tank?

Under federal law, propane tanks (also called cylinders) can't be more than 12 years old. If yours has passed that age, you are not supposed to be able to refill it.

Your mouth waters as you toss chicken and steaks onto your gas grill. You take comfort in knowing that the poultry and beef are fresh, delicious and safe to feed to your family.

Speaking of safety, have you given any thought to the age of your grill's propane tank?

If you’re like many consumers, it’s a good bet that you haven’t. You may not have even been aware that tanks have life spans. Under federal law, propane tanks (also called cylinders) can’t be more than 12 years old. If yours has passed that age, you are not supposed to be able to refill it.

At this point, your options include:

• Getting the tank recertified, for a fee, at larger commercial propane dealer. Recertification is good for five years. However, the cost and inconvenience of recertifying may exceed the price of a new tank.

• Buying a new tank and having it filled.

• Turning in the expired tank for a certified, filled tank as part of a tank exchange program (you’ll see the filled tanks kept under lock and key outside) offered at many convenience stores, supermarkets and home-improvement stores. By now you’re probably wondering how to determine the age of your existing tank. There should be a manufacturing date stamp on or near the tank’s collar, the top part that also serves as a carrying handle. For instance, if your date stamp says “01 99” as in the photo above, then it was manufactured in January 1999. Add 12 years to that, and its certification expired in 2011.

And it’s time to get a new tank.
