A series of major and devastating earthquakes have hit different parts of the planet this year. By magnitude, the severest quake recorded in 2022 was in Papua New Guinea on September 10, having a magnitude of 7.6. Another 7.6 magnitude quake jolted Mexico nine days later. Indonesia) Going by the damage they caused, the biggest quake this year has been the one that hit Khost in Afghanistan. The 6.0-magnitude quake on June 22 caused more than 1,100 deaths. Another big one this year was the 5.6-magnitude West Java earthquake on November 21 in which nearly 300 lives perished. Other significant earthquakes in the recent past have been 7.0 magnitude quake that hit Solomon Island’s Malango, the 6.1 intensity quake in Turkey ’s Duzce province, and the 6.2 jolt that hit Mexico’s Baja California. As per estimates, the year 2022 has already recorded over 11 earthquakes of 7.0 or more magnitude while there have been more than 100 quakes this year which had intensity between 6.0 and 6.9. In India too, earthquakes have hit the northern as well as a northeastern region this month, causing fear.

This leads us to a question:

Is earthquake activity increasing?

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) states on its website that a sudden or temporary increase in seismic activity is considered normal and neither such an increase or decrease indicates a large earthquake might be imminent. One aspect of the increase or decrease in earthquake incidents is that the world now has more and advanced seismic instruments that can record such activity better. "According to long-term records (since about 1900), we expect about 16 major earthquakes in any given year. That includes 15 earthquakes in the magnitude 7 range and one earthquake magnitude 8.0 or greater. In the past 40-50 years, our records show that we have exceeded the long-term average number of major earthquakes about a dozen times," states the USGS.

But, one may still ask the following question:

Can earthquakes be predicted?

The answer is a clear no, from the scientists. So far, no scientist or earthquake monitoring agency has been able to predict a major quake. What scientists have so far managed to predict is to tell that a significant seismic event could occur within a specified period of time (in years) in a specific geographical location.

Sometimes, people still ask:

What are MegaQuakes?

MegaQuakes are described as earthquakes with 10 or more magnitude. However, the USGS says on its website that such earthquakes cannot happen. The magnitude of an earthquake is determined by the length of the fault on which it occurs. If the fault is longer, it would lead to large quakes. "No fault long enough to generate a magnitude 10 earthquake is known to exist, and if it did, it would extend around most of the planet," says the USGS. The largest earthquake that has ever been witnessed on the planet in the recorded history was a magnitude 9.5 jolt that occurred on May 22, 1960, in Chile. The fault on which the quake occurred was about 1,000 miles long!

Will California break off?

No, California is not going to fall into the ocean. California is firmly planted on the top of the earth’s crust in a location where it spans two tectonic plates. The San Andreas Fault System, which crosses California from the Salton Sea in the south to Cape Mendocino in the north, is the boundary between the Pacific Plate (that includes the Pacific Ocean) and North American Plate (that includes North America). These two plates are moving horizontally, slowly sliding past one another. The Pacific Plate is moving northwest with respect to the North American Plate at approximately 46 millimeters per year (the rate your fingernails grow). The strike-slip earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault are a result of this plate motion. There is nowhere for California to fall, however, Los Angeles and San Francisco will one day be adjacent to one another!
