It is extremely difficult to become a SERE specialist.

SERE specialists are the Air Force's experts on recovering people who have become isolated. They know everything about surviving in difficult situations. They make sure that all high-risk-of-capture/isolation personnel return safely and with honor from any situation. SERE specialists provide initial training to all Airmen at the Air Force Survival School at Fairchild AFB, WA. They also provide periodic follow-up skills to keep people trained. SERE also provides training for personnel recovery and expertise for Guardian Angel rescue units, Special Tactics units, various headquarters operations centers, and more. SERE also tests parachutes and other jumping equipment for the Air Force. SERE Specialists teach other military members how to stay safe if they get lost or captured.
