Is it good to sleep with your hair wet?

Sleeping with completely wet hair damages the follicle and causes breakage, so you'll want to blast it with the hairdryer to dry out 70 per cent of your hair, or let it naturally dry till it's just a little damp,” says Sabanayagam. She also advises changing up your bedding if you're planning to sleep with wet hair.

Growing up, we had all heard the cautionary tales. The penalty for sleeping with wet hair could range from a hornet’s nest worth of tangles to a stubborn head cold that refuses to let go of you. If you’ve been refraining from washing your hair at night purely to dial back the morning-after stress, we have some good news. Turns out, it is possible to go to bed with wet hair and wake up with Rapunzel-worthy tresses. We got Divya Sabanayagam and Anjali Merchant, co-founders of DryFix, to draw up a roadmap to getting there.

What you need to know about sleeping with wet hair

“The most common question we’re asked is how wet can hair be while going to bed. It should only be slightly damp, and definitely not completely wet. Sleeping with completely wet hair damages the follicle and causes breakage, so you’ll want to blast it with the hairdryer to dry out 70 per cent of your hair, or let it naturally dry till it’s just a little damp,” says Sabanayagam. She also advises changing up your bedding if you’re planning to sleep with wet hair. “A silk pillowcase is ideal for resting your head, as the usual cotton options are extremely rough on your hair and can cause knotting and further breakage. A silken surface allows individual strands of hair to remain separate, thereby reducing tangles and knots,” she explains. A myth that Sabanayagam and Merchant would like to bust is the purported connection between wet hair and common colds. “Colds occur [because of] viruses, so sleeping with wet hair will not give you a cold. It can, however, give you a fungal infection if your pillowcase has fungal growth, so make sure to change your pillowcases at least once a week,” Sabanayagam recommends.

“Once you’ve sufficiently dampened the hair, it pays to opt for some precautionary prep. Work a sizeable amount of hair serum such as the L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Liss Ultime from the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair to discourage tangles,” says Merchant. You should also consider the hairstyle you want to wake up with the next day. “If you would like to wake up with curls, make sure to twist your hair well and secure it in a top knot, so that your strands can dry into those curls. However, if you would like to leave your hair straight, push it all up in one uniform direction and let it dry naturally. This also ensures that you won’t get any random waves or kinks from your head resting against the pillowcase,” she adds.

Should you sleep with a bra on?

Is it OK to sleep in my bra?

– Meera*

There's nothing wrong with wearing a bra while you sleep if that's what you're comfortable with. Sleeping in a bra will not make a girl's breasts perkier or prevent them from getting saggy. And it will not stop breasts from growing or cause breast cancer. Some women want to wear a bra to bed because it feels more comfortable for them. Your best bet is to choose a lightweight bra without underwire. Some camisole-style pajama tops even come with a bra built in. The bra you choose to sleep in shouldn't be too tight or have parts that dig in. An uncomfortable bra might make it hard to sleep or irritate your breasts.
