A wise woman once said, "Keep on dancin' till the world ends," but what if your party ends the world? Nine years have passed since Britney Spears first started this conversation, and now it looks like answers might finally come our way in a new drama called Kissing Game. Originally titled Boca a Boca ("mouth to mouth") in its native Brazil, the latest Netflix original opens with a neon party soundscape where boys kiss girls, boys kiss boys and girls kiss girls. Glitter, drugs, and a whole lot of tongue take centre stage while EDM beats pulsate to the rave's hypnotic rhythm. Think Skins, but it's 2020 in a small Brazilian ranch town called Progresso.

When the next morning arrives, most of the teens involved nurse some serious hangovers, but one in particular suffers more than most, screaming as she discovers a strange black mark has erupted all over her mouth. As news of the infection spreads, Bel's symptoms deteriorate further. Confusion and physical numbness start to take hold, and her veins start glowing in the dark. The local hospital has never encountered anything quite like it, and neither has the zombie genre either. The victims in Kissing Game aren't your typical, run-of-the-mill zombies. Instead of physically rotting like an undead walker, they become dead inside, losing their capacity to emote and empathise completely. It's not long before the rest of the town realise that the infection started spreading rapidly after the rave, kickstarting an investigation and a whole lot of suspicion among the townsfolk. While the parents blame outsiders who live near Progresso's boundary, some of the teenagers band together to investigate how the virus spreads. Social media and a "kissing map" akin to the family tree in Dark help Fran, Chico and Alex make connections and start to unravel the central mystery behind what's really going on. Despite opening with a euphoric party scene, it would be easy to dismiss Kissing Game as a cautionary tale against drugs and teenage sex. Taken at face value, the virus seems to justify the conservative viewpoint of the town's adult population, including the parents and teachers who are directly related to the victims.

Reframed in this way, Kissing Game doesn't reinforce conservative values. If anything, it champions those who resist Progresso's not-so-progressive stance on ideologies the younger generation hold dear. The transformative power of change and innovation start to take hold towards the sixth and final episode of season one, bridging the generational gap in Progresso. Still, it's not enough to eradicate intolerance completely. While tensions rise on a wider scale, Kissing Game also takes time to explore love and sexuality too, most notably with the blue-haired Chico.

After kissing a closeted student at the rave, his infatuation with a closeted older man who works on the ranch becomes more prominent than any of the teenage relationships. Issues surrounding identity and acceptance are interweaved with queer sex and a surprising amount of nudity which sets Kissing Game even further apart than other more traditional 'zombie' fare. In fact, revelations in the central narrative suggest the show as a whole stands in as a metaphor for queerness too, or at least, the suppression of it. After all, the final episode reveals a cure of sorts which only works when the victims open up and no longer suppress their innermost feelings. It's only by accepting themselves that these teenagers can truly live once more, much like queer people who only start to enjoy life fully once they embrace their own authentic selves.

The problem with this is that the show then confuses its message in the final episode by subjecting Chico to a homophobic assault. While this is a harrowing experience many queer people are forced to endure in real life, introducing his attack towards the end of the season implies a punishment of sorts, particularly as it follows Chico being outed to the town. Aside from this, Filho manages to balance the cautionary aspects of his story with something far more freeing for the most part. Assuming that Netflix renew Kissing Game before the world ends, we couldn't be more excited to follow these zombie-fied teens into a bolder future for Progresso where real progress can be achieved.
