Unnamed malicious actors are going to great lengths to scam Brazilian consumers out of their hard-earned money. According to cybersecurity researchers from Cyble, cybercriminals have created a fake Google Play Store page, which is being used to target the millions of customers of the Itau Unibanco bank with a malicious mobile banking app. It’s not clear how exactly the targets are led towards the fake Play Store page, but it’s safe to assume a phishing campaign is live. In any case, once the victim is lured to the fake page (which looks almost identical to the legitimate Play Store) clicking the Download button actually prompts for the download of an APK. This is the first major red flag, experts suggest, given that the Play Store installs the apps through the store interface and never offers the user the chance to download the actual APK.

Red flags

If the fake app is downloaded and run, it will try to open the actual Itau Unibanco app from the legitimate store, and use it to clear out the victim's accounts. The app doesn’t even need any major permissions during installation, making it hard for antivirus and anti-malware tools (opens in new tab) to detect it. What it lacks in permissions, it makes up through the Accessibility Service, researchers further explained, which gives the trojan all it needs to bypass Android security protections. The malicious app will ask for permissions to perform gestures, retrieve window content and observe user action. The fake website has since been taken down, but it is possible a new one might have popped up in the meantime. To avoid falling victim to a similar scam, users are advised never to download content from unfamiliar sources, watch out for red flags that might betray a scam (strange URLs, spelling mistakes etc.), keep their security solutions up to date, and use strong passwords (opens in new tab) and 2FA (opens in new tab).

What is the 27 virus?

In 'Your device has been infected with 27 viruses' pop-ups' case, users are presented with a fake pop-up message stating that their Apple device has been compromised by 20 malware threats and 7 phishing/spyware instances. Of course, this is all fake as no website can run a malware scan.

The 'Your device has been infected with 27 viruses' pop-ups are being propagated by a tricky website that targets Apple users predominantly. There are numerous websites functionally identical to the 'Your device has been infected with 27 viruses' pop-ups. Their goal is to scare the user into installing a dubious program, most likely a barely-functional PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Some scam pages can even run several different scenarios depending on the user's geolocation. In 'Your device has been infected with 27 viruses' pop-ups' case, users are presented with a fake pop-up message stating that their Apple device has been compromised by 20 malware threats and 7 phishing/spyware instances. Of course, this is all fake as no website can run a malware scan. The misleading statements continue, however, as users are further told that sensitive information such as social media accounts, photos, banking details, etc. could have been compromised. To stop the alleged viruses, users are urged to immediately download the app promoted by the scam. The program in question is named 'MacKeeper' and is classified by different security vendors as a PUP. It appears that the app is designed to pretend to be conducting a malware scan and then show a fake result screen with various dangerous threats that have been found. MacKeeper will then attempt to convince that targeted user into purchasing the full version of the application to remove the non-existent threats from the device. Users who experience an abnormal amount of redirects to scams similar to 'Your device has been infected with 27 viruses' pop-ups may already have an adware PUP lurking on their device. It is recommended to do a scan using a reputable anti-malware solution just to make sure that your device is clean.
