Despite finding out that London wasn't one of the top 10 most expensive cities to live in the world earlier this year, a recent study has worked out the income needed for a single person to live alone in London - and in some boroughs, it's more than twice the average London wage. Based around the price per square foot (according to the Greater London Authority's housing standards, the recommended amount of living space for one person is 420 square feet), the '2017 Rental Affordability Index', compiled by nested.com, examines the price of renting in 33 of the capital's boroughs as well as 15 UK cities and 72 cities worldwide. Unsurprisingly, the most expensive London borough to settle down in is Kensington & Chelsea which has an average rental cost of £6.73 per square foot. A single person would need a salary of £116,838.60 to live there. The second and third most expensive boroughs are Westminster, where you'd need £88,468.08 to live alone, and then the City of London, where an average salary of £71,684.64 is needed. With the average London salary equating to around £40k, according to the index, most Londoners would be priced out of the top 11 most expensive boroughs which include Camden, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Wandsworth, Southwark, Lambeth, Haringey and Hackney. Average earners could however consider Merton (£36,181.20), Richmond Upon Thames (£37,908) or Tower Hamlets (£35,019.36). But for those on a lower-than-average salary, the three cheapest zone six+ boroughs seem the best options: of Bexley (£21,463.44), Havering (£22,399.44), Barking and Dagenham (£24,110.04) or Croydon (£24,691.08).
