Is there a 9-point buck?

But in Montana, we refer to one side of the antler rack for both whitetail and mule deer. For a non-typical rack that has more points on one side than the other, it's referred to as a 4-point by 5-point, never a 9-point.

If you exchange hunting stories with someone from back east, you may hear them brag about the 10-point buck they tagged last season. Inevitably, mouths drop open and envy sets in, but only for a brief moment because it doesn’t take long to realize they are referring to what we in the west would call a 5-point buck. No one knows exactly where the cut-off is, but it is rumored to be somewhere in North Dakota. When referring to an antler rack, hunters on the east side of the United States count all the points and hunters in the west side of the U.S. only count just one side. One thing is certain, in Montana, you better not refer to an antler rack with four points on each side as an 8-pointer. I can’t help but question why. The most logical reason is because the abundance of mule deer, which traditionally has been counted using one side only, minus the brow tine or eye guard. A typical mule deer is four points on one side with brow tines. Whitetails, on the other hand, are typically counted using all the points on the antlers. But in Montana, we refer to one side of the antler rack for both whitetail and mule deer. For a non-typical rack that has more points on one side than the other, it’s referred to as a 4-point by 5-point, never a 9-point.

So why does it matter to so many hunters?

It doesn’t really, until you are sharing your hunting story and someone from the east starts bragging about their 8-point buck and snickers at you when you mention your 4-point. This has happened to me on a number of occasions. I even remember a friend from the Midwest making comments about how I should “let the little 4-points grow,” thinking I was referring to a forked horn and not one with four points on each side. After settling the issue over the antler count, ask someone from the east which way to hang the carcass, from the head or from the hind legs. That will get the conversation going again for sure.

Why do you zero a weapon?

Zeroing, or sighting in, a rifle is the process of aligning the sights on the weapon with the rifle so you can accurately aim at your target from a set distance.

Zeroing, or sighting in, a rifle is the process of aligning the sights on the weapon with the rifle so you can accurately aim at your target from a set distance. You cannot adjust a bullet’s flight path by making changes to the rifle itself, you must instead adjust the sights until the reticle or sight tip is in line with the path of the projectile leaving the weapon. You can zero your rifle from different distances based on what type of shooting you intend to do. Once your rifle is zeroed, the sights will only be accurate at the exact distance you zero it for, but you can use that to help improve accuracy at any distance. Zeroing your rifle establishes an accuracy baseline that you can make further adjustments to based on the firing situation and environment as you fire in the future.
