Take a second glance at those labels and you'll see that, despite creative ways of saying it, they have all something in common: extreme amounts of caffeine. While coffee's special kicker has been shown to aid fat loss, it's not the only food compound that can. In fact, you can eat actual foods that boost your slim-down efforts instead of just popping a pill. Try out these three common foods with fat-burning properties and see how delicious whittling your waist can be:

1 Navy Beans

These white legumes contain resistant starch, a type of fiber that both contributes to feeling full and controls blood sugar. (Translation: you won't be as apt to reach for the snacks.) Resistant starch makes it through most of your system in tact and makes your body work harder to digest it. In fact, subjects who ate five grams of resistant starch in a single meal (equivalent to about one-half cup navy beans) versus various other amounts burned 23% more fat, a study at the University of Colorado found. Use them in just about any recipe that calls for beans.

2 Herring

Overweight and obese subjects taking 25 micrograms (about 1,000 IUs) of vitamin D a day lost "statistically significant" body fat over 12 weeks, a 2012 study in Nutrition Journal found. Herring is one of the world's best sources of vitamin D, containing more than 100% of the recommended daily value in a one-ounce serving. Pickled herring is ready-to-eat and can be added to salads or stacked on Wasa bread for a quick snack. Not convinced enough to channel your inner Swede and try the pickled stuff? Grill it and dress with a mixture of mustard, lemon juice and its own oil for a dinner packed with protein and healthy fats.

3 Green Tea

When it comes to fat loss, tea isn't second string to coffee. Sure, coffee packs a more caffeinated punch, but tea has more going on than caffeine content alone. Catechins, antioxidants in green tea, appear to have a fat-reducing effect on their own. Subjects who consumed two servings of catechins (totaling 886 milligrams) in green tea (the equivalent of about 11 cups) reduced their waist circumference and lost more than 21⁄2 pounds of fat over 90 days—no workout required—relative to the control group, a study published in the journal Obesity found. Don't like green tea? No problem! Sip on any of these 4 Teas That Melt Fat Fast for the same tummy-trimming effect.

Is eating 1 meal a day OK?

Safety Concerns For most people, there are no serious dangers involved in eating one meal a day, other than the discomforts of feeling hungry. That said, there are some risks for people with cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Eating one meal a day can increase your blood pressure and cholesterol.

The “One Meal a Day” diet, or OMAD diet, claims to help you lose weight by forcing your body to burn fat. It’s a type of intermittent fasting, which alternates between periods throughout the day in which you can eat anything and periods in which you don’t eat at all. OMAD is particularly strict because you don’t eat for 23 hours, then consume all of your calories in a single meal. How It Works Like other kinds of intermittent fasting, eating one meal a day is a way of manipulating how your body finds and uses fuel. When you eat in a more traditional pattern, your energy comes from the food that you eat. When you take in carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into sugars. If you have more sugar in your blood than you need, a chemical called insulin will carry the extra into your fat cells. When you don’t eat for extended periods of time, your body produces less insulin. Your cells still need energy for fuel, so your fat cells release energy to compensate. For this to happen, however, you have to avoid eating for long enough that your insulin levels drop.
