These are roles which require skills but can be interchanged between industries. The skills required are not industry specific and are more based on EQ and relationships. Deep roles are roles like "Computer Processor Designer", "C++ programmer", and "Nanoparticle Scientist".

I read this very good article recently and it helped my thinking on an issue I've been thinking about for some time now. It is definitely worth spending about 7mins reading this before the rest of my article. I've been thinking about something slightly similar for a while now. It is the difference between roles (or skills) which are broad and roles which are deep. Broad roles are roles like "Business Development Manager", "Social Media Expert", and "Senior Manager". These are roles which require skills but can be interchanged between industries. The skills required are not industry specific and are more based on EQ and relationships. Deep roles are roles like "Computer Processor Designer", "C++ programmer", and "Nanoparticle Scientist". These roles are not normally interchangeable between industries or between skillsets. So giving a C++ programming job to an experienced web developer carries a certain amount of risk. Much more risk than giving a Business Development Manager role in the manufacturing industry, to a Business Development Manager in the retail industry. In this scenario high level industry knowledge can be quickly learned to support their long term experience and skills in building relationships and closing sales to becoming proficient and successful quickly. For a Web developer to learn C++ and be as successful as the Business Development Manager above could be a long and arduous journey. People who have experience in broad roles, but no experience in deep roles, think that deep roles are the same as the roles in their own experience. So if they want to cover a subject that falls into the "broad skill" category they just need to read up on the main points, learn how to use some tools, and they're sorted. Broad roles also seem to be quite trend based. So if they see a trend that they are interested in, like machine learning (a deep skill), and want to jump in on this new trend, they simply read the main points on that subject, learn how to use a few tools, and believe they're experts. This is also why people from broad industries, like futurists, will tell you that in the near future people will be interchangeable and you'll just be removed from one role and slotted into another role like you're a Lego block. Apart from the complete lack of respect for a person's humanity it also means they don't know the difference between broad and deep skills. Many roles are confused by people as being in the wrong industry. Copywriting is a good example. It is a deep skill which can be honed over many years, truly skilled copywriters can blow your mind, but because of all the "content creators" (a shallow skill) out there people believe that copywriting is an interchangeable skill. Just hand it to someone who is capable of speaking in complete sentences and everything will be just fine. When you see an advert or an article which is very obviously b-grade it is because someone has confused deep skills and broad skills and put people into the wrong roles. The most successful leaders are those that can see the differences between these skills and place people with the right aptitude into the right roles.
