In the wild, real men respect the basics. One wrong turn on a trail when the sun’s setting, or one missed item, and you’re in some serious trouble. It’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. So, here are 5 simple, must-haves to always carry on your next outdoor adventure.

1. WATER PURIFYING

In the wild, available water isn’t always drinkable water! These days, you can go old school or new school. Bring a 2-quart pan to boil water but when you’re pressed for time, try the following: 1) Survival straws can filter water and are light and easy to pack. 2) UV light distillers will kill bacteria and come in easy-to-pack sizes. 3) Solar containers use the sun to kill dangerous substances, and 4) Disinfecting tablets are an easy fix when you’re stuck in a cabin. The good news here; you have options.

2. MAN NEEDS FIRE

Sure, you love fire, but do you know how to start one? Again, you can go old school with a flint and rock or a bow and drill. Ferro rods can easily spark a flame when rubbed against your hunting knife. The easiest solution; just don’t forget to pack your matches and/or lighter!

3. SMALL BUT MIGHTY TOOLS

Survivors need tools and the good news is that there are plenty of essential ones to choose from. Two must-haves – a strong hunting knife and a hatchet. Also, remember, a dull knife or hatchet is worthless so bring something to keep those tools sharp. Fishermen, remember your line and hooks; unless you have a solution to catch fish that works better. Hunger may lead to creative solutions!

4. SHELTER BUILDING SKILLS

Out in the wilderness, nature gives you all the tools you need for shelter, if you know where to look. The type of terrain you are in can determine the kind of shelter required. Before heading out on your journey, take a moment to consider the right shelter. Once you’ve done that, pitch it, build it and create your own fortress.

5. KEEP WARM

A night outdoors can be beautiful, but sometimes can be downright cold. Whether you bring a sleeping bag or a wool blanket, make sure you have something to keep your body warm. Along with your sleeping gear, make sure you have layers of clothing, either on you or packed. Sleeping under the stars can be amazing, but only when you’re warm and comfortable. To enjoy the great outdoors, you need to respect it. Plan for the worst and enjoy the best of it.

Among people in their 70s, a 2015 study1 published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found 33% of sexually active men and 36% of sexually active women had sex at least twice a month. For people in their 80s, 19% of sexually active men and 32% of sexually active women had sex at least twice a month. According to the International Society for Sexual Medicine, the 2010 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior found almost 25% of partnered women over age 70 had sex more than four times a week. "Frequency of sex seems to decrease overall as couples age," Howard says. Though citing studies on older adults' sex lives like those above, she adds: "Age is just a number!" Lauren Fogel Mersy, PsyD, psychologist and AASECT-certified sex therapist, adds: "All aspects of our sexuality can change as we age. Arousal and orgasms might take longer, desire can lower, and sexual frequency can certainly decline, particularly as a relationship matures over years. Of course, this won't be true for everyone, but it is common."
