Education is not on the list...

I was educated once - it took me years to get over it.

Mark Twain

Success does NOT require a formal education and this has never been more true than right now. I've taken the liberty of building you a "keys to success" list. I learned these lessons by reaching out for things in life I had no business trying and failing miserably at the vast majority of them. Because success is many things, but one cannot succeed without making an ass out of oneself repeatedly. Fortunately, you only have to succeed big once or twice in life to achieve success...then you have to hang on. You may well have to fall on your own ass and if you do may you land gracefully. The shortlist I recommend you focus on is as follows

The Keys To Success

Wisdom

Integrity

Work Ethic

Purpose

Gratitude

Consistency

Resilience

Wisdom comes from experience and active listening. The best way to gain experience in a field that you enjoy is through mentorship. Find someone that is already successfully doing what you want to do and make sure you resonate with them. Make sure their attitude and outlook on things are generally in line with yours and that your personalities are complimentary. A great mentor is my number one recommendation for success. For more information about how to find a great mentor, you may find these articles I wrote on the subject helpful Integrity is a choice. You either choose to spend your life being open and honest and serving others or you choose to deceive and manipulate people and situations for personal gain. Some people will tell you that everyone lies sometimes and that being open and honest about everything will leave you vulnerable and at a disadvantage. These people are called skeptics and they live miserable lives While it might sound naive to suggest laying everything out in the open is your best option…it’s not. What you should do is default to honesty and then consider timing and delivery. When you say things and how you say things is where you bring in strategy to your conversations and negotiations. Being dishonest will not make you successful, it will make you miserable. These articles I wrote may also be helpful A Strong Work Ethic will be your best friend both in life and at work. Working hard is also a choice. Anyone who decides to do it can do it. It requires no training or skill and once you choose it, you can get better and better at it with practice. A strong work ethic will always beat skill, intelligence, and advantage in the absence of that same work ethic. All exceptionally successful people have a strong work ethic. Applying a strong work ethic to all these other principles is like throwing gas on a fire. I remember going to a basketball game as a young man and watching the Celtics play the Lakers. After the game, I sat in my seat and watched everyone leave. A few minutes after it appeared that everyone had gone I heard the repeating beat of shoes in the distance. As the noise got louder, I saw a figure of a man who appeared to be running up and down the stairs. As he got closer, I could see that the figure was Larry Bird. Larry Bird was running the stairs AFTER a game…a game he won with a stellar performance. Great successes work when no one else is watching If you don’t know who Larry Bird is just Google his name…and get out more

Purpose is your reason for being on this earth. I am here to serve and help other people. I have been a leader and a teacher my whole life. I remember asking my dad as a 6-year-old little league player what he meant when he said: “Mark you are a natural leader…people just follow you”. Of course, I thought he was just being my dad and pumping up my confidence so I dismissed him. Not one to give up, he said “I’ll make you a bet. If you wear my extra large white t-shirt to practice tomorrow untucked, the next day, your teammates will be wearing their dad’s white t-shirts untucked too”. I took him up on it and two days later at practice, I watched almost every one of my teammates arrive to practice wearing oversized white t-shirts…untucked”! Everywhere I've been happy working since I have found myself leading and teaching. Finding your passion or purpose is something most people don’t give themselves permission to do. Don’t make that mistake. Because I see this so frequently doing what I do, I created a free workbook for you to help you find yours. It’s called “Find Your True Purpose”. It’s very simple but it’s hard. It makes you look in the mirror and be brutally honest with yourself When you connect your purpose to your income, you’ll find new joy in your work and you’ll change other people’s lives for the better. It doesn’t get any better than this. Here are some articles I wrote that you may also enjoy Gratitude is my favorite attitude:) I don’t care who you are or where you’re from, you have a good-sized list of things you can be grateful for. You’re alive, you have family, friends, and colleagues who love you. You have the sky, the sun, the birds, and the plants. You have skills and little things that bring you pleasure. If you take some focused quiet time right now and think hard about the things you could be grateful for, you would run out of space to write them down. The best thing about gratitude is that when you are truly feeling grateful, there is no room for negative emotions like fear, anger, jealousy, or hate. It’s physically impossible to feel grateful and feel any of these other bad emotions at the same time.

Don’t believe me? Try it right now. Oh and the other great thing about gratitude? It’s a choice. Why would you choose anything else?

Instead of infecting the workplace in the common vernacular, why not infect the workplace with gratitude. It’s the most contagious of emotions:) Consistency is harder thank it sounds, but it’s well worth the effort. We admire people who show up every day. We admire people who resist the temptation to take a day off. One of the most respected records in all of professional sports is the “most consecutive games played” award. When you are learning something new, the fastest way to learn it is to immerse yourself in it every minute of every day for years until you put in your 10,000 hours.

“Come rain or shine”…”90% of success is just showing up”

Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.

John C. Maxwell

Resilience is the ability to get punched in the gut and jump back up and continue to move forward. If you choose to engage in life, you will experience hardship. There is no statement more true than this. Recognize early that you will be rejected and shunned over and over in your professional (and personal) life. Now learn to frame that properly and move on. My dad is great at this. He likes to say “I can walk into a room with 10 people in it and I guarantee you what will be when I walk out. Two people will like me, two people will dislike or hate me and 6 people won’t even know I was there” My brother is a bit more direct. “I don’t give a shit what other people think about me”

Both are very effective when applied to the opinions of strangers

We all take on our hardships too personally and we all make the mistake of seeking “fairness”. Most people who criticize you are too scared to try what you're trying and it unsettles them. When people criticize you it magnifies their own insecurities. Stop taking it to heart and press on. Formal education is broken. If you want to succeed, take chances, work hard, and don’t give up. Giving up is the only way to fail. College credentials are no longer necessary nor relevant. Great leaders today are looking for people who can recognize, define, and solve complex problems. Don’t waste your money on college. If you already did, suck it up and move on. Put some clothes in a backpack, earn a few dollars, and buy a ticket to someplace where the people look and speak differently than you. Spend a few months living and learning about life and then come home and get to work or stay on the road and fund your journey with jobs along the way.

Peace

Mark
