I was recently asked by Leadership Broward what it takes to be a great leader. You can watch the video here. I have been fortunate throughout my career to be surrounded by individuals who teach, inspire, and effectively lead their team or company to success. Below are a few leadership qualities I have picked up along the way. These attributes are my five “Ps”: polite, persistent, patient, present, and passionate.

Polite

Kindness is underrated. We learn about the “Golden Rule” when we are children. Oftentimes at work, it seems as if we’ve forgotten this rule. Good leaders are polite and kind to others, knowing that this behavior is contagious. Many business situations and negations can be resolved much easier if you are polite and respectful from the start. Having this attitude will lead to stronger connections among coworkers and business partners, and will create better communication and collaboration in the workplace.

Persistence

You need to know what you want to have done, and you need to be able to explain why it is a good thing to do. Persistence requires you to be goal driven and determined to get the job done regardless of the obstacles. Determination is essential to any leadership role and will inspire others to do the same. Having a team of goal driven individuals and future leaders can set the path toward higher efficiency and productivity within the company.

Patience

Patience is not something I was born with, but I am working diligently to improve this skill. If you have any tips or strategies you use on how to be more patient, I would love to hear them! One lesson I’ve learned is to give realistic goals and deadlines. This is not to say that you should not have high expectations. You should not compromise the quality of your work because you are impatient. As with many things in life, quality is a result of time and patience.

Present

As Warren Buffett once said, “You will never see eye-to-eye if you never meet face-to-face.” Even in today’s interconnected, omnipresent world, being actually there in person is extremely important in building strong connections. Travel is necessary, even if it means flying around the world or when it is -20°F at your customer’s headquarters. The effort you’ve made to meet face-to-face can go a long way in differentiating you and your company from the competition.

Passion

You need to be passionate about your work. I’ve worked all my life, and having this passion is what drives me in the morning to get out of bed, get dressed, and get out there. You need to have passion for your business, the customers you sell to, and passion for the people you’re doing it with.

These simple strategies have helped me tremendously through my career. What are some tactics, skills or qualities you’ve learned that have helped you become a better leader?

What is K 5 education called?

Elementary Education Elementary Education (K-5)

Early childhood and elementary school years are a vital period of child development – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our Early Education (Pre-K), Transitional Kindergarten (TK), and elementary school programs offer a safe, nurturing environment that promotes the physical, social, emotional, creative, linguistic, and cognitive development of each child through developmentally and culturally appropriate practices while responding to the needs of the child and his or her family. EARLY EDUCATION (Pre-K): These programs are managed by the Child Development Department. Our programs offer full-day preschool, part-day preschool, and before and after school care for families who may qualify for state-subsidized funding. Families who are not income eligible may also be able to obtain services. We serve children in 20 different school locations across the District. Please visit the EARLY EDUCATION page for more information or call our main office at (626) 396-5762 x 10070 TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN (TK): TK bridges the path between preschool and kindergarten, providing students with the smart start they need to be confident learners in kindergarten and beyond. TK is available to those children who turn 5 between September 2 and December 2 of the current school year. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: Our elementary school campuses value diverse learning styles, provide rich experiences for all learners, and nurture high self-esteem, character development and lifelong learning. Teachers utilize integrated thematic units, allowing students to make sense of ideas across all subjects. Our elementary programs focus on the whole child. This means teachers provide rigorous academic instruction and in addition, help promote the social and emotional learning skills students need to be middle school, high school, college and career ready.
