Charles Long's book could just as easily have stopped at the first three words as what he writes has a very universal application. My test of a book is whether or not I would pass it on and whether I have made any personal footnotes about the book. This book succeeds with flying colours. It is replete with painfully sensible questions and intelligent discussion of possible answers. Instead of being preachy it allows the reader to draw their own conclusions. It is a philosophical treatise with very pragmatic underpinnings. I would commend it to anyone dreamily thinking of escaping to the country to live a mythical rural lifestyle. It is there indeed, but there are also some ruts in the road and the biggest one may be unrealistic attitudes. I am biased about this book as I read it shortly before retiring to what had been an abandoned century home devoid of electricity or indoor plumbing. I came away with a more sound understanding of what I was getting into and what would be some of the 'challenges' or disasters. I have gone on to read two of Mr Long's other books on Backyard Stonebuilder, and Escaping the City, which is a further endorsement of his jocular, practical approach to living way out here!
