What colors should you not wear hiking?

“Avoid colors that don't blend in with nature, like browns and greens. Wear, red, yellow or orange. Dogs are not allowed on CMC hikes, but if you're hiking with a dog, they should also wear a blaze orange vest.” That is also the advice – and the law – for hunters.

Now president of the area’s oldest and most venerable hiking club, Morgan knows the ropes. She knows about keeping hush and hidden when in the woods to allow everyone the tranquility of the outdoors experience. But when hiking in autumn, and into the winter, she advocated being as loud as possible – in what you’re wearing. “We encourage everybody to wear some kind of blaze orange, or any bright colors. A hat is most effective since it’s the highest point of your body, or wear a blaze orange vest and wrap it around your backpack,” said Morgan, or Haw Creek. “Avoid colors that don’t blend in with nature, like browns and greens. Wear, red, yellow or orange. Dogs are not allowed on CMC hikes, but if you’re hiking with a dog, they should also wear a blaze orange vest.”

That is also the advice – and the law – for hunters.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s “Home From The Hunt” safety campaign reminds hunters to comply with blaze orange requirements as firearms seasons commence across the state. Hunters in North Carolina are required to wear a blaze orange-colored garment, such as a hat or a vest that is visible from all sides when hunting certain game animals with a firearm. These animals include bear, feral hogs, deer, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, pheasant and quail. Deer hunters must wear blaze orange during a deer firearms season, regardless of weapon. “Blaze orange is a color that doesn’t occur naturally in the wild,” Chet Clark, the commission’s eastern outreach manager, said in a statement. Studies show that blaze orange clothing increases visibility of the wearer. This helps the wearer be seen by other hunters, especially in low-light situations. This can also be helpful when locating someone who is lost or injured. Even though this requirement does not apply to private landowners as long as they are hunting on their property, the commission strongly encourages everyone to wear blaze orange. Hunting season with guns is now in effect throughout District 9, which encompasses all of the counties in Western North Carolina from Burke County west to the Tennessee line, as well as Wilkes, Allegheny and parts of Surry County.

Be sure of surroundings before pulling the trigger

The “Home From The Hunt” safety campaign also reminds hunters to always take their time and positively identify their target before pulling the trigger. “It’s easy to get excited when you’ve got something in your sights,” Clark said. “It’s important to collect yourself and ensure there are no houses, vehicles or people in front of or behind your target.”

The four basic rules of firearms safety:

Always point a firearm in a safe direction.

Treat every firearm as if it were loaded and never assume a firearm is unloaded. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Be sure of your target and what is beyond your target.

Clark advises all hunters to always point their guns in a safe direction. One good practice is to use binoculars to first identify a target and then sight through a scope only when ready to fire. All first-time hunting license buyers must successfully complete a Hunter Education Course, offered free across the state. In the 2013-14 hunting season, there were 33 hunting and hunting-related accidents in North Carolina, including two fatal. Of the two fatalities, one was “type A,” an incident resulting in discharge of a firearm or bow while hunting, and one fatality was “type B,” an incident while hunting that does not involve discharge of a firearm or bow, which results in injury or death.

In the 2014-15 hunting season, there were a total of 24 hunting incidents, including four fatalities, two type A and two were type B. Morgan, with the Carolina Mountain Club, said it can be confusing to non-hunters as to when and where hunting takes place. A good rule is to check the Wildlife Commission’s webpage for maps of hunting seasons and areas. “Occasionally we’ll come around a corner and see a deer hunter or a bird hunter waiting quietly in the woods and we’ll say ‘have a good day’ and go on,” Morgan said. “If you hear a gunshot, it’s recommended to say ‘Hikers in the area!’ to make ourselves heard.” If you are hiking, trail running or dog walking and want to avoid the possibility of coming across rifles in the woods, Morgan suggests choosing an area where hunting is prohibited, such as the national parks – Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. While all state parks in Western North Carolina are now closed, as of publication, hunting is also prohibited in these places, including Mount Mitchell and Lake James. She said as long as everybody is aware of everybody else in the woods, and everyone wears blaze orange, conflicts should be minimal.
