Although the strong gun culture and rates of firearm ownership in Switzerland bear similarities to those of the United States, the number of mass shootings is incomparable. Switzerland's last mass shooting was the 2001 attack on the Cantonal Council in Zug, which killed 14 people; the Gun Violence Archive recorded 692 mass shootings in the United States in 2021 alone. This is the highest figure since the nonprofit research group started tracking shootings in 2014.
