PROGRAM ORIGINALLY AIRED ON THIS DATE: Survivor, “Don’t Say Anything About My Mom” (Season 26, Episode 13) [Stream on Prime Video] WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Following Survivor over the seasons, a few universal truths become apparent: being able to fish won’t ever truly save you; if production likes you, you’ll always be able to find a hidden immunity idol; and host/producer Jeff Probst loves himself a blindside. LOVES it. So much so that he’ll declare a blindside even when no blindside exists. But when we’re in the midst of a run of honest to God for real blindsides, watch out, because he might never stop smiling. Survivor: Caramoan wasn’t short on big moments, from Brandon Hantz’s epic rice-dumping meltdown to Malcolm playing double immunity idols on his bros Eddie and Reynold. But the blindsides really started soon after that, when the dominant alliance led by John Cochran — a self-consciously nerdy Survivor superfan — began devouring its own. First it was Andrea, who sent home with an idol in her pocket. And then came this episode, which moved so quickly and with such hairpin turns, you couldn’t get up from the couch to get a drink or you’d miss a huge strategy shift. This week was also the quasi-annual loved-ones-visit episode, which always ratchets the emotions up like crazy; and in a very Probst-ian twist, not one but TWO loved ones is present for each Survivor. Brenda wins the reward challenge and is then given one of the show’s all-time cruelest twists: after she already picks her tribe buddy Dawn (and her husband) to go on the reward with her, Probst says: pick one more friend OR give up your and Dawn’s loved-one visit and let the whole other tribe go on the reward instead. It’s one of the more diabolical decisions ever faced on the show. The reward challenge dilemma always exists, especially when one is given this kind of choice: giving up the reward is selfless and it will engender goodwill from everyone who might soon be on the jury voting for a winner, but doing such a nice thing in public means everybody knows you’re going to be a favorite with the jury, so why would they take you to the end? The other thing is that the loved-one visits always introduce an element of the personal and the irrational. Which is where Dawn comes in. Brenda chooses the self-sacrifice option, but in doing so, Dawn loses out as well. And despite being the motherly nice-lady out there, Dawn ends up holding a grudge deeper than any revenge movie. So when it later comes time to haggle for votes, Dawn is ultimately sold on the idea to snake Brenda just a day after she made such a selfless gesture on their behalf. On a game level, it’s fully defensible. On a personal level, it is a deeply dark betrayal of a player who everybody seemed to like. And when it came to the end of the game, the jury didn’t let Dawn forget it.
