Do cows sleep? Where do cows sleep? Do cows sleep standing up? I’ve always heard about cow tipping, it it really possible to tip a cow?

These are just a few of the questions we sometimes hear when people are around cows for the first time. That’s why we created this short video to show you exactly where our cows sleep.

Do cows sleep?

Yes!

Where do cows sleep?

Our cows sleep in the pasture. At night, they often gather together in a herd near trees. One of the reason they gather as a group is because cows have strong protection behavior. In fact, a Colorado State University graduate student recently did a study on the protective behaviors of cows and calves. The study found that when there was a potential threat (like an unknown vehicle, person or predator in the field), the Mama cow would place herself between the potential threat and her calf in order to protect the calf.

Do cows sleep standing up?

Nope, sorry. You’re thinking of horses. Cows spend a large portion of their day lying down, chewing their cud and sleeping.

Is it possible to tip a cow?

No, this is an urban legend that only happens in the movies.

First, you have to remember that cows are very apprehensive and uneasy of anything that’s unfamiliar to them. They are easily disturbed and they would run away from anyone that got close to them. Second, don’t forget that a cow weighs around 1,000 lbs (when not pregnant), and that’s a lot of weight to push over. Third, even if you did get close enough, a cow stands on four legs and would quickly shift their stance when you pushed on them so that they didn’t fall. In case you still think it’s possible, make sure you read about the students from the University of British Columbia that have developed a mathematical formula that proves cow-tipping is a myth.

Is there such a thing as free electricity?

Well, that isn't exactly true. You can provide energy for free, but it doesn't mean that there aren't costs associated with the generation of it. When we started Alpha 311, our initial intention was simply to provide enough energy to power a highway streetlight without cost.

Well, that isn’t exactly true. You can provide energy for free, but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t costs associated with the generation of it. When we started Alpha 311, our initial intention was simply to provide enough energy to power a highway streetlight without cost. We wanted to save local authorities this expense (and associated carbon taxes) so that their funds could be spent on the local community. Then we discovered the true energy potential of ultra-lightweight turbines installed on lighting columns being driven by passing traffic.

Opportunity

This has presented us with ‘other opportunities’.

Internal sensors can monitor the status of each turbine and the road/environment around it (air quality and traffic flow, for example). We’ll generate more energy than a streetlight needs, so that excess energy can go elsewhere; for example, micro-cell solutions.

A quick note: did you know that Ericsson has developed a 5G micro-cell with a 1KM broadcast range that only uses between 5-7KwH of energy a day?

Then there are the offsite solutions (non-highway); for instance, directly powering businesses.

When a company is spending 2/3 of its monthly electricity bill on delivery/transmission charges there are obvious savings to be had by generating and storing your own energy.

Pipe dreams?

Nope. Welcome to the last four months at Alpha 311. We’re having active conversations about all of the above. ‘Other opportunities’ like these are enablers. They will enable us to facilitate the vision of providing ‘free’ and low-cost energy. Powering streetlights, at no cost, is now possible and we can also greatly reduce transmission costs by localising energy generation.
