What Is an Element in Biology?

All living things or organisms, found on Earth can look extremely different from each other. Microscopic single-celled bacteria like E. coli are quite different than multicellular plants like ferns. Additionally, humans are vastly different than slime molds that live in the soil and feed off decomposing matter. What do all organisms on Earth have in common? Every living thing on the planet has six of the same elements, or substance that contains one type of atom. These six elements include carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur and are collectively known as the biological elements or six elements of life.

Even microscopic bacteria are living things and contain the 6 biological elements.

Atoms

Each of the many elements found on the periodic table is composed of their distinguishable atoms. Atoms are known as the building blocks of matter because it is made from atoms which are the smallest unit of all matter. How are atoms of other elements different from each other? All atoms contain a dense central region called a nucleus. Inside the nucleus of an atom, positively charged protons are found. All elements have a different number of protons and are, therefore, given their own atomic number. For example, an atom of hydrogen contains 1 proton and has the atomic number 1 while an atom of carbon has 6 protons and is given the atomic number 6. This pattern continues for even larger elements like thorium which has an atomic number of 90. The structure of each element's atoms gives it certain properties that can allow it to combine with itself or with other elements to make molecules. For example, water or H2 O is one of the most important molecules found on Earth since all life requires water. To form water, 2 atoms of hydrogen are chemically bonded with 1 atom of oxygen. Additionally, elements can form even larger molecules such as glucose, C6 H12 O6. Though organisms may contain different molecules, the same six biological elements can be found in all life on Earth.

Where Did the Elements Come From?

The world-renowned astrophysicist Carl Sagan once said, "We are made of star-stuff." Sagan's quote comes from Fred Hoyle's theory of supernova nucleosynthesis. A supernova is an extremely large and powerful blast that occurs when a star has run out of fuel. When the star has depleted its fuel of hydrogen and helium, it starts to cool and expand in size. If the star is large enough, it will collapse and create a supernova. During this explosion, the star's elements are scattered throughout space and can create a large cloud of gas and dust called a nebula. In turn, a nebula can then form new stars and solar systems. Therefore, the elements found on Earth today were created billions of years ago from dying stars.
