Blame the weather and skincare products all you want, but you can’t deny the fact that the foods you eat truly have a huge impact on your skin. Each food contains different components that will either help or damage your skin. The appearance, texture and elasticity of your skin are majorly affected by the food you consume. If you’ve tried every moisturiser and skincare treatment to combat dry and flaky skin but to no avail, maybe its time you made a few changes in your diet. Here are five foods that could be sucking the moisture out of your skin leaving it dull and dry.

Coffee

Large consumption of caffeine restricts the fluid flow to your skin by constricting the blood vessels. One area that is majorly affected by this is your eye area. This problem worsens when you consume coffee first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Limit your coffee intake to one cup a day and notice if that reduces the dryness.

Sugar

Too much sugar is not good for anyone, irrespective of their skin type. High levels of sugar in the bloodstream weakens collagen which is necessary to maintain skin elasticity. Avoid food that contain high levels of sugar. If you have a sweet tooth, opt for honey which is a safer and healthier alternative.

Salty food

Besides sugar, consuming excessive salt is unhealthy for the skin too. It extracts more fluid out of the body, thus leaving your skin dehydrated. If you end up eating foods high in salt such as French fries or potato chips, make sure you balance it out by drinking lots of water.

Refined carbs

White rice, bread and pasta are high in refined carbs which have the same effect of your body as excessive sugar. It wreaks havoc in the bloodstream and damages the natural collagen, causing dryness, wrinkles and premature ageing.

Alcohol

You’ve noticed how frequently you have to visit the washroom after a few pints of beer? That’s because alcohol is a diuretic — it draws liquid out of your body. This leads to dehydration and dryness which can also lead to wrinkles and fine lines.
