Are you looking for hotels with two-bedroom suites? Extra space makes any vacation a lot more comfortable for families with babies, teens, or 2+ kids. I have two teenagers. We can fit in a standard hotel room, but my family needs three beds – and preferably separate bedrooms – to sleep comfortably. A standard room is OK for a night or two, but more privacy and comfort make family vacations better. A two-bedroom suite can help make your vacation feel like a vacation. The good news is that plenty of hotels have larger, family-sized suites. Here are a few tips that will help you find a great suite fast.

Search for “suites”

Searching for suites can help you narrow your search faster. TripAdvisor has a “suites” filter under Amenities. In the photo example below, searching for suites narrowed my options in Park City, Utah from 151 hotels to 29 hotels.

Here's how to use it.

On a computer, look on the left side of the screen for “Amenities.”

Click “Show All.”

Check the boxes next to your other must-have amenities like “swimming pool” or “free breakfast” as well. A suite doesn't always have bedrooms, but it typically indicates a larger room with at least a pull-out sofa. It should include any rooms with at least one bedroom.

We stayed at the Homewood Suites in Carlsbad, California for our last LEGOLAND trip. Our room was a 1-bedroom suite with two double beds, a pull-out sofa, and a kitchen. The hotel also had a pool, complimentary breakfast, and complimentary evening reception – which was basically a light dinner. It was a short drive from both LEGOLAND California and the beach.

Look for independent/unique properties

A lot of independent, unique, or older hotels offer a variety of room options – including multi-bedroom suites or whole houses. There are usually only one or two larger suites at an independent property, so book early for best availability. The advantage to these hotels is that they often have more personality than a chain hotel and they are owned by people who live in the community. We recently stayed in a spacious 2-bedroom apartment at the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, Arizona. We and our teens loved staying in separate bedrooms. It was also nice to have a full kitchen and a living room. With a pull-out couch in the living room, this apartment was large enough for 8 people.

Consider camping

KOA, state parks, and other commercial campgrounds are now offering camping cabins. Some of these have separate bedrooms and are large enough for most families. Check to see if linens and towels are provided. If so, you can get the camping experience without having to pack any extra gear. And look for commercial campgrounds like KOA near both cities and outdoorsy destinations. Campgrounds frequently offer on-site fun that you won't find at a typical hotel. Amenities frequently include swimming pools, fire pits, barbeque grills, playgrounds, hiking trails, and more in a great location. Most people who stay at campgrounds are friendly, and there's a spirit of camaraderie that's hard to find at a hotel. At the KOA near Monterey, California, we stayed in a cozy “2-bedroom” cabin that had a queen bed, bunk beds, private bath, and a pull-out couch. We had so much fun grilling steaks and toasting marshmallows outside, then crawling into comfortable beds and using our private bathroom inside.

Ask for adjoining rooms

Most hotels offer adjoining rooms, with an inside door between them. This strategy isn't my favorite because I like the extra amenities (like kitchens) that usually come with suites. But adjoining rooms should be easy and available to get at nearly any hotel. If you choose a budget hotel, two adjoining rooms might be less expensive than a two-bedroom suite at a nicer hotel. Extended Stay America offers spacious rooms with full kitchens for a budget price. Call the front desk to request adjoining rooms. They may not be able to guarantee your request, but you should get it nearly every time.
