In the United States of America, earthquakes of the most extreme strength occur. In the case of earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 9.0, destruction and devastation can occur within a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. Measured against the size of the country, earthquakes occur very rarely.Since 1950, more than 310 people have been killed by the direct consequences of earthquakes. There were 44 earthquakes that also caused a subsequent tsunami, which claimed further lives, and cause additional damage.

Earthquakes in the United States of America since 1950

This list includes the strongest earthquakes recorded in or around the United States of America by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the past 14 days. Whether an event is listed here depends largely on its magnitude, but also on its distance from inhabited areas. All data refer to the local time. This page is updated daily at 11 am UTC.Most earthquakes within the U.S. occur in the sparsely populated areas along the Gulf of Alaska and the chain of islands in the Bering Sea. Much better known are the earthquakes along the densely populated San Andreas Fault, which runs from north to south over 1000 kilometers through California. All three regions are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Here the Pacific plate with its oceanic crust meets under the plate of North America, causing regular tectonic stresses in the subduction zones. At the Earth's surface, this faulting is best observed in the movement of both plates between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Los Angeles lies on Pacific plate, while San Francisco lies on North American continental plate. As the Pacific plate moves north, the North American plate drifts south. In this way, Los Angeles and San Francisco come closer by an average of 2.4 inches per year. Because the lithospheric plates in this region are only a few miles thick, minimal but steady movement is possible in some places. In other places, the two plates become entangled and break away jerkily after increasing pressure. The resulting earthquakes often reach magnitudes of 6.7 on the moment magnitude scale. Rarer are quakes of magnitude 7-8.Probably the best-known, and so far most severe earthquake in the USA took place in San Francisco in 1906. Due to the lack of technology at that time, only estimated values between 7.7 and 8.4 are available for the magnitude. A total of around 3,000 people died as a result of debris and fires. The strongest earthquake in the United States of America happened on 03/28/1964 in the Alaska region with a magnitude of 9.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake also triggered a tsunami, leading to further victims and destruction.
