With many mutants and cannibals able to drop your health in just a few quick hits, fighting from a distance will be your safest bet every time, especially on harder difficulties. These are the 3 best ranged weapons in The Forest that you should grab before you reach the end of the game.

Modern bow

The modern bow will be your best friend once you discover it, as it deals much more damage than the crafted bow. This version of the bow is powerful enough to drop regular cannibals in one shot to the head and makes hunting animals much less of a pain. To get the most damage per arrow, utilize the modern arrows with the modern bow.

How to get the modern bow

To find the cave that contains the modern bow, you will first need to have the rebreather and climbing axe, which this guide has all the info on how to acquire them. Once you have those two crucial pieces of gear, you can start your journey towards the cave that you need to find the best ranged weapon in the game. It would be best if you were prepared with armor and decent weaponry before you make this journey, as you will be facing some strong opposition on your trip there. You will be heading towards cave 7 for this journey, starting at the sinkhole and heading north and northwest of the lake that you find. Following the land bridge will land you close to the cave entrance. Just beyond that landbridge, you will see a pile of rocks that contains the climbing rope that you will need to enter the cave. Shortly after you enter the cave, head straight past some hanging corpses to find a rope that will take you deeper into the cave; from above the first climbing rope, you can see several cannibals and an Armsy that you can fight from a distance with fire arrows or the flare gun. Once you dispatch these cannibals and mutants, you will see a barricade with crosses on it. Destroy this and carry onwards through another barricade that will lead you to a massive pit. You will see a rope to your left side, so you should descend that rope to the next section. Another rope to your right after that one will take you to the third rope you need to descend. On the third ledge, you will need to use the climbing axe to shimmy on the left wall to make it to the next rope to take you to the fourth ledge. After this journey, you will use the climbing axe on the right wall to take you to the next rope that will take you to the bottom of the area. At the bottom, you will face multiple cannibals and mutant babies, which you can dispatch pretty easily if you have come prepared. After you have dispatched them, carry on forwards to a point in the cave that you have to shimmy through, and you will enter an opening. Hang to the left in this area, and do not fall into the chasm, or you will die. You will see a rope that will take you down to the next area with a pool of water. Hang left towards the small opening until you get to a tent and keep moving forward in that direction. You will encounter a few cannibals in the path, hanging to the left; after you dispatch them, you will come across some more barricades which conceal more mutants and cannibals to fight, so top off your health and energy before you continue.

The cave you enter will open drastically; therefore, it is easy to get lost. Following that stalagmites, you will encounter a few Virginias that will attack you on sight. You can take them down or proceed to the right that will take you to a water pit that you can either drown them in or flee by swimming down into it with the rebreather. Proceeding down this path by heading deeper and then ascending once you find the cave leads upwards, you will come across an area that opens back up on the surface. Here you will see many boxes, and on top of one of them lies the modern bow to be claimed. This area is okay for grabbing more modern arrows, but the most common location to find more modern areas is in yellow crates that you can find all over the peninsula.

Crossbow

Amongst the 3 best ranged weapons in The Forest, is the very powerful and accurate crossbow. The only drawback with this weapon is that ammo can be challenging to find. This weapon has a very high stopping power to rival the modern bow. The crossbow takes about 3 seconds to reload, therefore should be used for fighting from a distance or to handle enemies one on one. This is especially true when fighting most mutants. The advantage of using the crossbow is the range and accuracy increase compared to the modern bow, and often you can retrieve the bolts from your foe’s corpses. The disadvantage, however, is that you can only utilize crossbow bolts and no other arrow type.

How to find the crossbow

To find the crossbow, you must have the rebreather for this journey as well. Starting at the great tree near the yacht beach, you need to head west towards a boat on the coast. Utilizing the rebreather, you will make a very large swim and avoid sharks as you swim the distance towards the small island with the shipwreck. Another method that we recommend is using a raft to get this far rather safely, but the shark AI can be finicky at times, so always prepare for the worst. Once you are on the island, you’ll look west to see the sunken half of the boat, and you’ll see it if you are facing toward the great tree. Once you see the remains underwater, use the rebreather and swim deeper into the ship, leading you to a cave entrance. Once you enter the submerged cave, swim down and then back out of the water, and you will find yourself in a cave where you can walk freely. The crossbow will be straight ahead alongside a blueprint to build the cross, coffin, and church.

Flare gun

The flare gun makes the top 3 best ranged weapons in The Forest purely due to how versatile it is. For combat, the flare gun makes setting your foes on fire extremely easy, with a slight damage tradeoff compared to using molotovs. One of the most impactful benefits of the flare gun is that ammunition can be crafted from flares, and it can hold a near-endless supply of flare gun ammo, therefore stocking up on endless rounds as necessary to repurposing the flares into a weapon or light source.

How to get the flare gun

The flare gun is one of the easiest weapons to find in the forest, so grabbing it early on is almost necessary for any run. Start your journey on the landbridge just a bit northwest of the sinkhole to find the flare gun. Run towards the snowy mountains straight until you get closer to where the mountain starts to ascend. Heading east towards the northeastern side of the peninsula, you should see some areas where you can climb higher on the mountain. Higher up now, keep heading right until you see the head of the plane. Head inside and right in the cockpit will be the flare gun and the pilots’ remains.

Honorable mentions for the best ranged weapons in The Forest

There are a handful of effective weapons in The Forest and some of them do deserve some love and should be used in any playthrough regardless of the difficulty. A quick way to deal damage when you don’t have any arrows is using weak spears to throw at your foes. Remember that the upgraded spear and weak spear deal the same amount of thrown damage. And, of course, you may be wondering why the flintlock pistol didn’t make this list. The flintlock pistol is a very powerful ranged weapon. However, the time it takes to gather ammo and the pieces needed to craft makes it less viable than other options. It comes with the disadvantage of reload time in combat which can cause you to die quickly, especially if you aren’t adequately prepared. That’s not to say it’s not a tremendous ranged weapon; it just lacks the versatility as the other weapons on this list but is certainly very fun to use late or post-game.
