SNAP is a federal program that provides food-purchasing assistance to low-income households. Although it is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the program is administered at the state level. Recipients are now issued Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards to pay for food rather than physical food stamps. In an August memorandum, the USDA said that maximum SNAP allotments will increase for the 48 states and the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Alaska. For a family of four receiving a maximum allotment in the 48 states and D.C., benefits will be $939. Maximum allotments for a family of four will increase to a range of $1,172 to $1,819 in Alaska; to $1,794 in Hawaii; to $1,385 in Guam; and to $1,208 in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The minimum benefit for the 48 states and D.C. will increase to $23 and will also increase in Alaska, Guam, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Will extra food stamps continue in Oregon?

The extra SNAP benefits provided to help qualifying individuals and families get enough healthy food during the COVID-19 emergency will end in Oregon by March, 2023.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, most Oregonians who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-- or SNAP-- have also gotten monthly, emergency allotments. Now, that’s about to end. Starting back in April, 2020, the extra benefits were provided to help qualifying individuals and families get enough healthy food during the COVID-19 emergency. On Tuesday, the Oregon Department of Human Services announced February will be the final month that the agency is allowed to provide the extra food dollars. The change comes out of the recently passed Congressional Congressional Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023. Under the new legislation, SNAP households will receive their last emergency payment on March 2. Oregon Food Bank / KLCC Oregon SNAP recipients will see a final emergency food benefit allotment added to their EBT cards in February, 2023. Under new federal legislation, the extra supplemental food assistance must end. Regular SNAP benefits will continue to be added to recipients’ electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards between the first and the ninth of each month. Oregonians who receive SNAP are encouraged to prepare for the change in their food benefits. In a statement, ODHS Director Fariborz Pakseresht said, “As Oregon continues to be impacted by COVID-19, we know that without these emergency food benefits some in Oregon may experience hardship and hunger. We encourage them to contact our partners at 211, Oregon Food Bank and their local Community Action Agency for support during this difficult time.” Find out what your regular SNAP benefit amount is. Knowing your regular SNAP benefit can help you budget.
