If there's one thing gaming isn't short of, it's badasses. From silver-haired swordsmen to bespectacled physicists and primary school kids, they come in all shapes and sizes.

This lot have spilled more blood than a hospital intern with a hangover, but who's the baddest-ass badass of them all?

12. LUIGI FROM MARIO BROS

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. He hunts ghosts even though he's scared of them. His New Super Mario Luigi Bros U levels are among the hardest you'll play - until Super Mario Maker came along. And he can jump higher than his brother, so there's that. But the real reason why Luigi is such massive badass is THAT death stare. Luigi clearly has a dark side, which is perhaps understandable after being overshadowed by his bro for the best part of three decades.

Telltale Games

She may not be a stone-cold zombie killer (yet), but Clementine – star of Telltale's excellent Walking Dead games – has managed to do what so many people in the same universe can't: survive. But what really makes Clementine so badass is that potential. She's only 8 years old when we meet her, and yet she's still breathing by the time the credits roll. Just imagine how deadly she's going to be when she grows up and can shoot straight. Even Carol from the TV show would like her. Probably.

Rockstar

Of course John Marston was going to grow up a badass. Fiery Scottish blood and a childhood of hardship, Marston was an outlaw by 17 and left for dead, having been shot during a bank robbery, by 20. OK, so he turned his life around, bought a ranch and had himself a family, but that doesn't make him any less hardcore. He's killed bandits, corrupt officials, revolutionaries and zombies by the dozen. He's also a mean poker player, chews tobacco, drinks whiskey and can even herd cattle. Quite simply, he's tougher than you are.

9. KRATOS FROM GOD OF WAR

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. Nobody revels in badassery quite like the (anti)hero of the God of War games Kratos. Covered in the ashes of his dead wife and child, Kratos journeys from the depths of Hades to the summit of Mount Olympus to slay the gods that wronged him. The most violent of all video game characters, Kratos can usually be found tearing the heads off of gorgons, plucking the eyes out of cyclopses (and they've only got one to begin with) and stabbing manticores with their own scorpion tails. But that all pales in comparison to the time he ripped the fingernail off the giant Titan Cronos. Ouch.

8. BAYONETTA FROM BAYONETTA

Platinum Games

Angels, demons, it's all the same to Bayonetta. While most gaming protagonists rely on brute force and big weapons, Bayonetta is a bit more creative than that. Armed with four guns and kung fu skills that would make Bruce Lee bow down and call her master, she kicks, punches and spanks her enemies into submission, before summoning demons to finish them off. Even more impressive is that she does it all in a pair of stilettos.

7. SCORPION FROM MORTAL KOMBAT

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. So strong is Scorpion's desire to get revenge on the head-ripping, spinal cord-swinging Sub Zero, that not even a little thing like death can stop him. Currently residing in hell, Scorpion sets his opponents on fire when he wins, can teleport from one side of the screen to the other and shouts "GET OVER HERE" when he harpoons someone with a spear.

6. MARCUS FENIX FROM GEARS OF WAR

Microsoft

The quintessential action hero, Marcus Fenix would have given Sly and Arnie a run for their money if he'd ditched the guns and taken a trip to Hollywood. He'd have at least got a part in The Expendables, that's for sure. The gruffly spoken one has muscles in places where most people don't have places - that armour looks like it weighs a ton - and will quite happily carve baddies up with a chainsaw when guns won't cut it. He's also got a heart of gold, having once abandoned his post to rescue his dad. Aww.

5. DR. GORDON FREEMAN FROM HALF LIFE

Valve

A theoretical physicist with glasses and a scrawny physique, Gordon Freeman probably knows what it's like to be hung up by the Y-fronts and have your lunch money stolen - but if those bullies could only see him now. The strong, silent type, Freeman never had any form of military training, but give him a Glock 17, Gluon Gun and crowbar and he'll mow down more aliens than a kid at a Space Invaders cabinet on pocket money day.

Square Enix

Brainy, athletic and brave, Lara Croft is not to be trifled with. Mercenaries, fanatics, treasure hunters and even dinosaurs have found that one out the hard way. Even a couple of rubbish films starring Angelina Jolie can't slow her down. The recently released Rise of the Tomb Raider has only added to Lara's badassery, as gaming's number one heroine somehow manages to survive freezing conditions and bone crunching encounters - and sometimes without even wearing a jacket.

3. SEPHIROTH FROM FINAL FANTASY VII

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. To some he's known as the Man in the Black Cape, to others he's the One Winged Angel, but to role-playing fans he's Sephiroth, or Mr Sephiroth, sir, if you don't want to taste seven feet of razor sharp steel. The Final Fantasy VII baddie is one of the most ruthless villains in gaming, making a generation of gamers reach for the tissues when he mercilessly killed poor Aeris. He's also one of the few people that can pull off a head of silver hair. You try telling him he's got a stupid haircut.

2. TREVOR PHILIPS FROM GRAND THEFT AUTO 5

Rockstar

He's not as big as Marcus Fenix, he's not as brainy as Gordon Freeman and he hasn't got a 7-foot katana like Sephiroth. But if there's one bloke in gaming whose pint you most definitely wouldn't want to spill, it's Trevor's. The man with a passionate dislike of hipsters - even though he's accused of being one himself - Trevor Philips plays by his own rules, sets his own moral code and quite frankly does what he wants when he wants.

Darth Vader is too badass to be confined to one medium. Since stealing the show in Star Wars: A New Hope all the way back in the 1970s, the single-minded Sith Lord has appeared in more than a dozen video games. He's turned rebels to blocks in LEGO Star Wars, gone toe-to-toe with Yoda in Soulcalibur and hunted wookiee hide in The Force Unleashed. Most recently he can be found striking fear into rebel hearts in Star Wars: Battlefront, using his Force Choke to teach those traitorous scumbags some manners. If only he could use it to shut those sweary teens up on Xbox Live.
