Deconstructed: The Hermès Himalaya

Why collectors are in thrall to the extraordinary craftsmanship behind the creation of the ultimate bag — and why the Diamond Himalaya is the most desirable handbag in existence. Illustrated with Himalayas offered at Christie’s The ravishing Hermès Himalaya Birkin bag is considered the Holy Grail in a handbag collection, while the Himalaya Kelly bag is fabled as ‘The Rarest Handbag in the World’. How did this handbag achieve such cachet? The answer lies in the construction of this wearable work of art, a striking blend of superlative design with fabulous materials.

1

A gradation that resembles the majestic, snow-capped Himalayas The Himalaya Kelly is crafted from Nile crocodile hide. The designation ‘Himalaya’ does not apply to the origin of the bag, but rather to the delicate gradation of the colour. The smoky grey fades into a pearly white, resembling the majestic, snow-capped Himalayas. The dyeing process is time-consuming and exponentially more difficult as the shades lighten — to create the immaculate white of the snow and the gradation to rocky grey requires great skill and a fine eye.

2

The ultimate expression of artistry The finished product is wondrous to behold. Marrying precious materials and craftsmanship with the Hermès equestrian heritage, the Himalaya Birkin is the ultimate expression of the artistry and tradition of the storied Hermès maison. A collecting phenomenon The introduction of the original series of Himalaya Birkins spawned a collecting phenomenon. Handbag collectors around the world recognised the rarity and exquisite craftsmanship behind the Himalaya. Consequently, in a resounding response to the appetite of collectors, Hermès began to craft a limited number Himalaya Kelly bags for top clients.

What is recommended as a natural shelter if lost in the wild?

Look for a natural shelter, such as a rock overhang or a thick stand of evergreens. The site should be dry and well drained and offer protection from the wind. Ideally, it also should be near water and plenty of firewood.

A lean-to can be built using tools from a field-dressing kit.

Start preparing your camp well before dark.

Look for a natural shelter, such as a rock overhang or a thick stand of evergreens. The site should be dry and well drained and offer protection from the wind. Ideally, it also should be near water and plenty of firewood. If no natural shelter is available, pick an area with materials nearby to build a lean-to or debris hut. A lean-to is constructed by leaning branches against a horizontal support to form a frame for a roof. Be sure to position the opening away from the wind. Cover the frame with evergreen branches to block out wind or precipitation. If you brought a haul line with you, use it to bind the branches in place. Leaves and twigs may be heaped on top of the branches. If you need additional protection, add side walls. If you are in a snowy area, you might consider building a snow cave.

Lifesaving Rainwear

Most hunters carry a set of lightweight, soft rainwear in their packs at all times. This extra set of clothing can be a true lifesaver if you become lost. It serves as an outer layer to insulate and protect your body from wind. In addition, if your regular clothing becomes wet, you'll have something to protect your body while you dry your clothes. You can survive for a long time in a wilderness situation—even without food—if you can make a shelter, build a fire, and dry your clothing.
