3 / 17 Igor Vershinsky/Getty Images Make safety a priority Just because you use something in your daily life, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t dangerous once you discard it. “When not properly disposed of, these substances can leach into the environment,” explains Scheel. “Once this happens, these chemicals have the potential to harm humans, plants, and animals as the toxins contaminate things like the air, ground, and even our drinking water.” Certain items can also be dangerous to anyone who handles them or is in the nearby vicinity if an incident occurs. “Disposing of materials such as pool chemicals, batteries, oil, and household chemicals in the regular trash or recycling harms the environment and poses a safety risk to sanitation workers and the public, as these items can spark fires inside containers and collection trucks, as well as recycling facilities,” says a representative for Waste Management. “These materials require special handling. Residents should check with their local municipality or county for proper disposal options.” 4 / 17 vchal/Getty Images The importance of having a plan We live in a country that produces a lot of waste—and subsequently has a lot of waste to manage. Even if each household has just a few items of concern, that can quickly add up. “The average household generates more than 20 pounds of household hazardous waste a year, and Americans generate 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste a year, meaning it is necessary for consumers to have a plan in place for how to dispose of these items,” says Scheel. “The proper way to dispose of items that should not be thrown in the trash is to either schedule a home-pickup service or locate a local drop-off facility or event that will properly dispose of that waste for you.” It’s also a good idea to be proactive, thinking about the environmental impact and disposal considerations of certain items before you buy them. “According to the EPA, the best way to avoid the risks associated with household hazardous wastes is to properly monitor the use, storage, and disposal of products that contain potentially hazardous substances,” says Scheel. “While it is impractical to completely avoid buying household products that contain zero potentially hazardous chemicals, consumers can reduce the negative impacts these substances have on the environment by educating themselves on which items cannot be easily thrown away in the garbage and how to properly dispose of these items.” So, what should you be on the lookout for? We’re so glad you asked!

What color of lips is healthy?

Normal, healthy lip color varies, depending on skin color and other factors, but should fall in the reddish-pink-to-brown range.

Blue Lips

When lips turn bluish in color, this is typically caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood.Ⅴ Why does this happen? We all have red blood cells that circulate in our bodies, bringing oxygen to body tissue. When carrying a full supply of oxygen, the red blood cells that pass through our veins are bright red in color, which causes the skin to be pinkish or red.Ⅵ Blood cells that don't have a full supply of oxygen appear dark bluish-red in color. So, those with a lack of oxygen in their blood can have lips that appears bluish in color.Ⅶ Blue skin, or “cyanosis,” in medical terms,Ⅷ can alert you to many medical conditions that range in severity. Cyanosis can be caused by a problem in the lungs—such as drowning, being at a high altitude, bronchiolitis, or severe pneumonia—or problems in the airways that lead to the lungs—such as choking, croup, epiglottitis, or breath-holding.Ⅸ Cyanosis can also be caused by heart problems, including congenital heart defects, heart failure, and cardiac arrest.Ⅹ The following reasons may also cause the lips to turn blue:Ⅺ Long-lasting seizure Exposure to toxins like cyanide Drug overdose Exposure to cold air or water As you can probably guess, most of the causes of blue lips are very serious and require immediate medical attention.Ⅻ However, if cyanosis develops due to exposure to cold air or water, staying in a well-heated environment and making sure to dress warmly before going outside are easy preventative measures you can take at home.ⅩⅢ
