BINGO CALL SERIES CHALLENGE #8

80 - Gandhi's Breakfast, Four Score, Eight and Blank

Gandhi didn't eat anything for breakfast and so 'ate zero' makes 80.

Footnote: Despite extensive research, I failed to find any texts to support the above statement. Two tablespoonfuls of wheat, one of peas, one of rice, two of sultanas, about twenty small nuts, two oranges, and a cup of cocoa for breakfast. This was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s breakfast on 22 August 1893; it was the start of an experiment in which he ate only raw food for over 11 days. Throughout his life, Gandhi would be interested in matters of diet — making detailed notes on the food he ate and the effect it had on his physical and mental state, publishing essays on the conclusions of his experiments. In Gandhi's Search for the Perfect Diet: Eating with the World in Mind, historian Nico Slate chronicles the Mahatma’s experiments with food.

Four Score equals eighty units or eighty years

late Old English scoru "twenty," from Old Norse skor "mark, notch, incision; a rift in rock," also, in Icelandic, "twenty," from Proto-Germanic *skur-, from PIE root *sker- "to cut." The connecting notion probably is counting large numbers (of sheep, etc.) with a notch in a stick for each 20. That way of counting, called vigesimalism, also exists in French: In Old French, "twenty" (vint) or a multiple of it could be used as a base, as in vint et doze ("32"), dous vinz et diz ("50"). Vigesimalism was or is a feature of Welsh, Irish, Gaelic and Breton (as well as non-IE Basque), and it is speculated that the English and the French picked it up from the Celts. If you’ve ever played bingo, you will have heard the caller following up the numbers with distinctive nicknames. You might hear references to Now and Then, Naughty Forty or Three Sore and Ten, and wonder where these phrases come from.

Experiences of bingo

• Older people are more likely to start playing bingo as adults, often after retirement, and to be introduced to bingo by friends. • Bingo is a site of community connection and real pleasure. Most players valued bingo because of: its social nature; the fact that it offered the chance to win money which provided both a thrill and, for some players, occasional help with pressing financial needs; the cognitive stimulation it provided; the escape it offered from responsibilities and stress; its predictable and affordable nature; and the fact that it is seen as a relatively low and ‘controlled’ spend. Participants regard it as a good game as people aged, as safe and open to all and some players value the fact that bingo raises funds for community organisations
