10 Things That Should Be in Your Emergency Kit

Disasters can happen anytime, so it's important to be prepared. Having a ready "go bag" to quickly grab before evacuating instead of taking time to assemble the essentials can make all the difference in emergency situations. But what are the items that you should definitely have in your "go bag" emergency kit? Watch this video or read on to find out. Survival kits should have supplies and tools to provide basic protection against the elements, meet health and first aid needs, and signal to rescuers.

1. First aid kit

First up, it's important to have a first aid kit that can allow you to treat possible injuries and prevent infections even without immediate access to a clinic or hospital. This should contain band-aids for small wounds, gauze and medical tape for larger cuts, tweezers to remove glass shards or foreign particles from wounds, small scissors, alcohol wipes to sanitize, and an instant ice pack. If you have any prescription medicines, pack about three days' worth of these in your emergency kit as well.

2. Toiletries

An emergency kit should also contain a supply of basic toiletries such as toothbrushes, personal hygiene products, toothpaste, soap and shampoo.

3. Water container

The rule of thumb when it comes to emergency water supply is to have at least one gallon of water (3.875L) of water per person per day for at least three days. Having a portable water container is also very useful when the supply of water is limited and only rationed out in an evacuation.

4. Flashlight

It's not unusual to have no electricity during emergency situations, so a flashlight is definitely handy in enabling you to find your way during a blackout or under debris. While your phone typically comes with a flashlight option, it's better to have either a battery-powered one with a stronger beam or a rechargeable one.

5. Swiss Army knife

The importance of a portable multi-tool in emergency kit cannot be overestimated. Its components be used for eating, opening canned goods, cutting through clothing, etc.

6. Whistle

Getting trapped under debris is a very real possibility during fires or earthquakes, so having a whistle to call rescuers' attention to your location can make the difference between life and death.

7. Blanket

A lightweight portable blanket is useful in both hot and wet conditions. This can be used as protection during a typhoon, fire, flood, etc.

8. Waterproof case

This case can protect your phone and cash in case you need to wade through floods or be exposed to rain. Even better, you can use a waterproof bag for your entire emergency kit to ensure that the contents stay dry.

9. Radio

Cell sites can be down during disasters, so it helps to have a radio that can keep you updated on relief and rescue efforts.

10. Rope

There are several practical uses for rope during emergency situations, including a lifeline, rapelling from high places, building a shelter, securing items, and so much more. Don't wait for disaster to strike before you start preparing. Start shopping some of these items at The Good Store.

NOTE: The CDRC Go Bag is no longer available in the store.

How to know if a guy likes you?

22 Subtle Signs A Guy Likes You, From Dating Experts He leans toward you during conversation. ... He angles his body toward you in the room. ... He finds small ways to compliment you. ... He makes eye contact. ... He steals a glance at you. ... He singles you out in a group. ... He seems drawn to you in the room. More items... •

Here's the thing about trying to know if a guy likes you: Sometimes looking for small signs is never going to give you an accurate full picture of what's going on. Some guys will do all of the above with their friends, while other guys will like someone but not do any of the above. "Some folks may be less able to express their attractions as overtly as this," Battle says. "For instance, my shy clients sometimes struggle with externalizing their feelings for a crush even in subtle ways. That means that even though they like someone, it might be harder for the other person to tell. When in doubt, talk about it!" If you're not sure if a guy likes you but is hiding it, just ask him and let him tell you directly how he feels. It sounds scary, but it definitely doesn't have to be! A simple "Hey, I think you're really cool, and I'm kind of into you—are you into me?" is casual, direct, a little sexy, and also nonthreatening. If it's a no, at least you know! And if it's a yes, now the fun stuff begins.
