Chiranjivi (Sanskrit: चिरञ्जीवि, IAST: ciranjīvi) are the eight immortals who are to remain alive on Earth until the end of the current Kali Yuga, according to Hinduism. The Sanskrit term Chiranjivi means “immortal”, even though it does not correspond with “eternal”.[1] The term is a combination of "chiram" (long) and jivi (lived).[2] Scenes from Hindu mythology depicted in art. Etymology and scriptural context [ edit ]

The term is a combination of chiram, or 'permanent', and jīvi, or 'lived'. It is similar to amaratva, which refers to true immortality. At the end of the last Manvantara, a demon attempted to become immortal by swallowing the sacred pages of Vedas, as they escaped from the mouth of Brahma. The scripture was retrieved by the first avatar (Matsya) of Vishnu. Incarnations of Vishnu (Narasimha and Rama) also later fought and killed two asuras, Hiranyakasipu and Ravana, who tried to become immortal through obeisance to Brahma and Shiva, respectively. In one sense immortal can mean "to live eternally until the destruction of universes", i.e., all physical bodies are foretold to become immaterial at the end of time, along with the Brahma himself, with the destruction of the universe.[3]

The extant Puranas, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata describe seven long-lived personalities in the Hindu pantheon. There are others as well, which are not included in the one particular shloka. Each represents a different attribute of man, which as long as they live, will exist amongst humanity.[4]

Tudi Gong, simply called Tudi, is a deity in Taoism and other Chinese beliefs. Tudi Gong is depicted as an elderly man with a white flowy beard who dons a golden hat and a bright red or yellow robe. He holds a wooden shaft in one hand and a golden ingot in the other. Shrines dedicated to Tudi Gong can be found in every town or community in Taiwan. In the olden days, when villages were primarily concerned with agriculture, people sought the Earth god’s blessings for a bountiful harvest. Nowadays, they ask for wealth and well-being in prayer. The Earth God is also invoked when a deceased is buried, thanking Tudi for the land. Contrary to other deities, shrines of Tudi Gong within the home are placed under the altar or below the front door. On this day, devotees visit nearby temples to pray and give offerings such as the customary Taoist gift of longevity noodles and red tortoise cakes. Longevity noodles are long noodles that are cooked without breaking them and eaten without biting in the middle. Red tortoise cakes (or Ang Ku kueh) are cakes made from rice skin and sweet filling, molded into a tortoise shell shape. Both the foods are symbolic of longevity and prosperity.
