British Medical Journal investigation findings into calorie content at fastfood takeways and restaurant chains including Hungry Horse, Flaming Grill, Stone House and Sizzling Pubs shocked Heart Research UK Fastfood takeaways like KFC, McDonald's, Burger Kind and Subway are HEALTHIER than many popular restaurants, research by the British Medical Journal suggests. The calorie content of meals in UK restaurants is "excessive" and sit-down restaurants are unhealthier than fast-food chains, the BMJ investigation found. The findings have shocked Heart Research UK, who are now calling on restaurants to cut the calorie count in their menus. Health experts say meals should not exceed 600 calories, but in this study they averaged 1,033 in restaurants and 751 in fast-food chains. University of Liverpool researchers analysed thousands of meals from places like Hungry Horse and McDonald's. The research team looked at more than 13,500 meals on the menus of 21 sit-down restaurants and six fast-food chains. Even when the study compared similar meals, the energy content in restaurant meals was greater. Burger meals in restaurants contained an average of 414kcal more than burger meals in fast-food chains, while salad meals in restaurants were slightly higher in calories on average than fast food salads. Their studies found that Hungry Horse restaurants had the highest average meal calorie content of 1,358kcal, and chains including Flaming Grill, Stone House and Sizzling Pubs were not far behind, with an average of 1,200kcal per meal. KFC was the most calorific the fast-food chain on the list, with an average of 987 calories per meal offered. Burger King, McDonald's and Subway were around 700kcal.

They University of Liverpool said their findings were a cause for concern.

Alexandra Preston, Head of Healthy Hearts at Heart Research UK said: “These statistics come as quite a shock, and we would encourage restaurants to offer lighter options and healthy choices on their menus so that eating out can still be a healthy and rewarding experience. “With a little research, it’s easy to make healthy choices whilst eating out. Swapping those chips for a side salad, having a burger without the bun or opting for a vegetarian meal are great ways to keep the calories down whilst still enjoying a meal out.” Dr Eric Robinson, lead researcher from Liverpool's department of psychological science, said the results were "shocking" but probably underestimated the calories consumed in restaurants - which suggests the sit down meals could EVEN MORE unhealthy than the takeways. "We don't know about energy intake but 'plate clearing' is a common behaviour. Our analysis did not include drinks, starters, desserts or side orders." Dr Robinson said portion size, the ingredients used and cooking methods could explain the difference, but he said the food industry had to make changes. "It's really clear what the food industry need to do. They need to act more responsibly and reduce the number of calories that they're serving." Hungry Horse said it offered something for everyone at good value. A spokesperson for the chain told the BBC: "We have been working hard to increase the range of lower calorie options, including recently launching a dedicated Live Well range with dishes under 600 calories, and we are committed to further changes."
