9th July 1981 – “It’s on like Donkey Kong!”

I didn’t have a Nintendo as a child – I was firmly in the Sega camp, with a Master System and later, a Game Gear. However, I was always jealous of friends with the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES (and later SNES) as the cool kids called it. But before the popularity of the NES, Mario, and The Legend of Zelda, came the Donkey Kong arcade game. One of the earliest platform games, Donkey Kong was released by Nintendo on 9 July 1981. The original Donkey Kong arcade game was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, and was hoped to appeal more to Americans than Radar Scope, which had tested poorly with audiences. Sales of the machine were quick, and the game become one of the best-selling arcade machines of the early 1980s. As one of the first arcade games to feature multiple stages, at the time of its release Donkey Kong was the most complex arcade game, thanks to its four unique stages. As with many video games, the protagonist, in this case, the first appearance of Mario (originally named Mr. Video then changed to “Jumpman”) has to rescue a damsel in distress, Pauline (originally named Lady), from a giant ape, throwing barrels and fireballs, Donkey Kong. (If that’s bringing back happy memories you can play a flash version in your browser here. If you’ve never played Donkey Kong, shame on you, go play now.) Donkey Kong is one of the most recognised video game characters in the world, and while Nintendo of America may not have been convinced it would succeed, it did. The game was so popular on its release in the US and Canada that there were problems fulfilling demand after the initial 2,000 units sold out and Japanese manufacturers were too slow sending further units. By October 1981, Nintendo was selling 4,000 Donkey Kong units a month, adding up to 60,000 units sold—or $180 million worth— within the first year. Donkey Kong spawned various sequels in the form of numerous series, and that’s not to mention the spin-off Mario franchise. Some of the original versions of the game have since been re-released, for example, the NES version was re-released as an unlockable game in Animal Crossing for the GameCube and ported to Nintendo consoles Wii, WiiU and 3DS in 2013 and 2014, under the name Donkey Kong Original Edition. And the game continues to be played – gamer Wes Copeland played what may be the most perfect game of Donkey Kong ever played on 5th May this year, got a high score of 1,218,000, and lost no lives doing so. Finally, a lawsuit brought on by Universal City Studios, alleging Donkey Kong violated their trademark of King Kong, ultimately failed.
