Steve Jerve, who has worked as the chief meteorologist for the NBC Tampa affiliate WFLA News Channel 8 for 23 years, will retire on Aug. 6. “You reach that point in life where you decide to make that decision to move on to the next phase of your life and I’m doing that,” Jerve announced during the Monday evening newscast. The 60-year-old has been working in television for 40 years, including seven years at WFTV in Orlando, and stints in St. Louis, Jackson, Mississippi, and in Minnesota before he joined WFLA in 1988. “This is completely my decision. WFLA has been fantastic and wants me to stay but this is a personal decision for me to want to move on,” he told viewers. Jerve praised the “great, great awesome weather team” and the viewers “who ultimately decide whether you keep this job or not. I really appreciate you giving the input to hire me all those years ago and to sustain me through these years.” More local news:Longboat Key mansion sells for $9.1 million after being on the market for eight days In case you missed it:Joseph Smith who was convicted of killing 11-year-old Carlie Brucia dies He has covered hurricanes and tropical storms for nearly 30 years, beginning with Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and most recently Hurricane Elsa.
