Why a child should pick their own bedtime?

Proposing the motion Katie Jones said that allowing children to choose a later bedtime would give them more time to do their homework and watch educational programmes on television. "It will also give children more time to go out with friends and to talk to their families in the evening" she said.

Children in Cornwall should be allowed to choose their own bedtimes at weekends and during the school holidays, according to pupils from St Day and Carharrack Community School. The pupils came up with this conclusion after debating the issue in front of the chairman of Cornwall County Council Doris Ansari. The 60 key stage two pupils were welcomed to County Hall in Truro by Mrs Ansari OBE who invited the youngsters to begin a debate on the motion : "Children should be allowed to choose their own bedtime". Proposing the motion Katie Jones said that allowing children to choose a later bedtime would give them more time to do their homework and watch educational programmes on television. "It will also give children more time to go out with friends and to talk to their families in the evening" she said. "Children know when they are tired and if they have to go to bed when they are not tired, they have to lie there doing nothing". Others opposed the motion, arguing that staying up too late in the evenings would leave children too tired to concentrate properly at school and could even make children ill. "If you go to bed very late, then you could fall asleep in your class" said one pupil, while another warned " you might be too tired to do well in your exams". After an extremely well argued debate 11 year old Ella Jarvis came up with an amendment stating that children should be allowed to choose their own bedtimes at weekend. Proposing the amendment, Ella explained that this would prevent children from being too tired for school, but would allow them to take some responsibility for their actions at weekends and at holiday times. Following the vote, in which the amendment was passed by 62 votes to 5, Mrs Ansari thanked the children for the responsible and professional way in which the debate had been staged. "You obeyed the rules of the debate and put your views across very well " she said. "You all respected each other when speaking and listened to each other's point of view."

In which culture is Cosleeping more common?

Families in predominantly Asian countries and regions such as Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, or China co-sleep much more frequently than in the United States.

What is co-sleeping like in other cultures?

Many families wonder what co-sleeping is like in other cultures. Many families also think – what if my culture and my family think that co-sleeping is the best way to do things? Those are great questions. Families in predominantly Asian countries and regions such as Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, or China co-sleep much more frequently than in the United States. The most important thing to remember across cultures is that you should be able to co-sleep with your child as long as you consider the risks and make it as safe as possible. There is a lot of information on this website about safety when your child is sleeping, including other posts about co-sleeping on this website, such as this video from Dr. Melisa Moore (“Is it ok to co-sleep?”), or this post by Dr. Deb Babcock (“How can I make co-sleeping safer?”). Also, check out the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) Guide to Safe Sleep!
