Read More »This ancient Torii is made from consolidated volcanic rock (a material also known as ‘tuff) and while not especially big it is notable for being from the Heian period. This makes it one of the oldest Torii gates in Japan. To reach Ishizukuri-myojin Torii, take the shinkansen from Tokyo to Yamagata Station. It’s a five-minute bus ride from there.
